Cold start up!
Just curious about somthing here. The temp. here in western pa has been like single digits during the day, and even below 0 at night. When I start my tc up after sitting awhile, it knocks pretty good for about 15-25sec then quites down to normal. It has done that also when the temps were in the 30's too. I know when it's cold the oil is like honey, but should'nt a new car with only 15k on it that has not been beat on and has had mobile 1 oil and filter in it ever since 3k be alot quiter on start up. That knocking is somthing I would expect from my 91' blazer w/150k on it! Just thought I would get some opinons to make sure I'm not being to **** about this!
actually... i work at goodyear in centreville virginia and i do oil and maintenance.. and technically youre not suppose to put mobil 1 in right off the bat... you should have waited a little while so that the motor could break in. The only real big difference now a days between the conventional and synthetic is just the cleaning additives. but yeah my dad did that with one of his trucks and he ended up having problems with it later on.. i mean i wouldnt really worry about it, but that could have contributed to the knocking perhaps... OR it could just be the cold weather haha... sorry im not much of a help but i thought i would just throw that out there
I did break in the motor for the first 3k with the oil that was in it from the factory! Trust me, I'm pretty **** when it comes to breaking in new vehicals, and maintaining them there after. I have done this in the past with other vehicals and had no problems. It's problely just the nature of the motor, but I just wanted to see if I was the only one experiencing this!
My tc only has 5000 miles and it starts up like ____ in the extremely cold temps as well. It does not knock but it sounds slightly ____ty at start up, and then it idles at about 2k for about 5 mins.
Mine tells me put me in coach I'm ready to go when it's cold
, It knocked one time for a few seconds when it was 8 degress out but other than that no problems. I waiting for some FL or CA guys to jump in on this one. What weight oil do you use ?. I use 5w30 mobil 1 from 6k on.

But anyway, if that noise is a loud ticking or clicking, more so than a knocking then you're fine!! No worries. It makes the same noise when warm, it's just not as loud so it's harder to hear. Next time you get the chance, let it warm up, like after a drive, and leave it running while sticking your head under the hood and see if you can hear the same noise at a lower volume.
Yea I read that post about Toyota recomending 5w-20, but to me there is not that big of a difference to be truthfl! I worked in several different truck garages where almost all the guys used the 15-40 oil in there vehicals for years and had no problem, import cars too! One guy has 200k on his integra and has used that oil since 60k and no problems. But anyways the clicking noise u are refering to is the injectors firing! The knocking noise is more like piston slap in higher milage vehicals in cold start up! I just thought it was strange to have that in a new vehical! I'm not to concerned about it, because after reading about how many people are boosting stock tc motors without problems, tells me that these engines can take some abuse. It' a toyota so it will run for ever! I hope!
