Default does the VVT-i "kick in"

ok since ive had my tc i wondered if the VVT-i worked like hondas vtec, my friends prelude, the vtec kicks in at 5k, and you can hear it, same with my boys spec-v, nissans secondary valve kicks in at 5k, and you can tell too, grated they both have CAI, what im wondering is do are engines do that, if it does im guessing 4k cuz thats when i feel more pull, what do you guys think, with a CAI make me notice this beter

You're thinking of VVTL-i (variable valve timing with lift) which the tC most definitely does not have. It hit lift at 6000 rpm. The Celica GTS and the Matrix XRS (pre 2006?) had them. Toyota does not make the VVTL-i engine anymore.

Edit: Wikipedia entry on the 2ZZ-GE

It does not work like VTEC. For one thing, it does not affect lift at all, only valve overlap, and it is a continuous thing, not an on/off type of change.

VVT-L is the same as Vtec a high rev motor to get to high RPM for maximum HP. VVT-I is not the same as VVT-L. Search for it on Youtube, you'll see and hear the difference.

VTEC and VVTLi have a variable lift setup which actually changes the camshaft profile when it "kicks in". It switches to the different lobes on the cam. VVTi is simply variable intake cam timing which advances the cam based on a duty cycle map. Like most setups it is advanced at low RPM and slowly backs off to zero as revs increase. I tweak it a bit when tuning with the Hydra usually based on where the turbo pools up. You can actually get the turbo to spool up faster and increase torque with small changes to the VVTi map so it is useful.
