Fixing A CEL
Hi Everyone,
I have a CustomtC.com Short Ram Intake (Link). It throws CEL's no matter what. I have no clue why it does it, but my friend who is a mechanic has narrowed it down to either a bad MAF, the filter size, or divine intervention.
Questions:
1. How do I know if it is a bad maf sensor, I don't have a stock intake to test it on...so I can't tell that way.
2. Are there any sites to get a different filter, and maybe that will fix the problem. (Would that fix the problem?) CustomtC says the K&N Filter won't work because of sizing issues, but are there any other options?

Check that the screw are tightened properly on the MAF. they also sale MAF cleaner. its a spray can. spry some on your MAF. you might have some dirt on it. Also check the plug . make sure it snapped in all the way. as for the filter. I have one of those universal Auto Zone filters. It has worked great for me. I have never popped a CEL for my intake.
Did you hit the sensor on anything during instillation ?

I didn't hit anything during the installation. The Sensor is plugged in, the screws are tight.
My mechanic recommend I spray it with brakleen, and I did, and then I removed the negative terminal for 15 minutes. I did the standard tests, I drove around, turned the car off, accelerated onto the highway from 5-65, and then drove 65 constantly, still no CEL. Turned the car off. Drove around some more, more highway driving, and still nothing, so maybe I figured I had cleaned the MAF and that was the problem. Well the next day, I was driving for around 20 minutes at 55 and it finally went off again...so IDK what to do, other people who own this intake also have a CEL too.

ok but what i mean to say is the hole that the maf goes into...is there a gap........if you were to remove the screws and jiggle the maf.....does it move easily?
what size is the intake (ie 2",2.5",3")

This happens on Weapon-R SRI as well. The cause for them is that there is a slight size offset in the hose that couples the pipe to the throttle body. This allows air to get in past the MAF and causes it to error. Check the coupling of the intake to the throttle body. Also, on my Weapon-R for the xB, the MAF hole was bigger than the sensor o-ring. I put a thin bead of silicone sealant around the o-ring on the MAF before screwing it down to the intake, no errors yet. Make sure you do NOT get sealant on the sensor bulb, that's why I put it on the sensor o-ring and not the intake before install.
Good luck, hope that helps. The filter doesn't matter, all airflow prior to the MAF looks the same to the sensor.

i dont think it would be the filter at all. it shouldnt be
i have an ebay Short Ram and never had a problem and i switched out the cheap filter with a injen and a aem dryfloe filter and still never had any CEL issues, did u try cleaning out the MAF sensor a bit with an air Bottle thing (that cleans key boards on comps)
