what makes you (and him) think your need to adjust your lifters to fix the knock? id look for restricted coolant flow, a lean injector, a leaking intake manifold gasket, a bad knock sensor, a bad A/F sensor, that kind of thing.

Lifters almost never need adjustment unless your head is coming loose or you cooked something in the engine. If it is making tapping noises then check your oil quality - if it is a real knocking sound then you may have some lower end damage . . . again check your oil. Make a video of it or a sound recording of the knock and post it here if you can so "we" can hear it.

you need to either post a video so we can hear it, or do a better job of describing what it sounds like. is it spark knock? clicking tappets? what?

The serpentine belt tensioner can make a tapping noise when it starts to go bad. Get an automotive stethoscope to figure out where your noise is coming from.
