Default Laptop integration

Can anyone tell me if there is a company that makes a program for a laptop that you can plug into the car that displays how the car is running? If so... how much it would cost?

i was wondering how that was done. i'm sure it's spendy though, i'm sure it's not like a USB plug in your car or something. should be though.

Go to www.autotap.com, they have a kit that includes a OBDII <-> USB interface that connects to your laptop. MSRP $179.95

Here's a screenshot:

Here's a list of the Generic Parameters the Autotap reads:

It seems if you're working on GM's or Ford's you may need the Enhanced pack, but generic should work on any OBDII-compliant car (any post-1996 car model).

    This is from their site:

    A. The AutoTap OBD II Diagnostic Scanner is designed for use on 1996 and newer OBD II cars. This includes all domestic manufactured vehicles and includes foreign vehicles manufactured for sale in the US. AutoTap may work with foreign vehicles manufactured for sale outside of the US, but we are unable to provide technical support for these applications.

A quick way to tell whether a vehicle is an AutoTap scan tool candidate is to examine the connector on or under the dash. If it is round, or any other shape than the rectangular 16 pin OBD II connector, an AutoTap scanner will not work on that vehicle.
This is what the OBDII connector should look like:

Toyota uses a generic OBDII protocol just like most imports do. You run into the specialized ones once you deal with GM or Ford.

It looks like Toyota is compatible with the OBDII: ISO 9141-2 and possibly the ISO 14230-4 (KWP2000) protocol. I will know for sure in a couple of months when my hardware gets in

at sema they had a card that you plug into your obdII port and it records up to 75 minutes of data for your car. you then plug it into your usb port after making your run(s) and analyse all the data. they sell it at sears as a diagnostic tool.
