yea it does say that, however if you are loosing that much too me that seems like there is a problem i dont care what the book says. If you have to add a quart every 600 miles there is something wrong.

I checked mine today and it was still full and i have like 3.5k since i changed my oil. Also for the 08 in the manual it says 4 quarts not 4.5 or 5

i dont know why it says that, seems extremely stupid to me. I have never had a car that burn oil like that so this car shouldnt.

Well its 4qts if your only changing the oil and not the filter. Otherwise an oil and filter change is 4.5qts. I have an 08 with 66k and I burn .5qt of oil every 5k

Pg . 259 in the 2008 owners manual.

Oil capacity (drain and refill), L (qt., lmp. qt)
with filter 3.8(4.0, 3.3)
without filter 3.6(3.8, 3.2)

hmm...im about to change my oil and checking the dipstick on level ground shows that i only have a little below the lower dot. i dont know how much that measures in quarts but that seems kind of crazy? my tc is an 08 with almost 20k miles. i havent seen any signs of a leak.

OK resurrecting an old thread to ask if there are any typical causes for heavy oil use that have been discovered. New here. And have never owned an Asian car. Have nearly 4000 posts on VWVortex (don't start throwing stuff yet). But my new girlfriend drives a Scion and the 1st thing I noticed about it is that it goes through a shed load of oil... Until I learn my way around here can you help a brother out?

TIA

that is normal. conventional oil has a lower breakdown tolerance. so once it breaks down than it has nowheres else to go but out. that is why synthetic is better, cuz it breaks down at a higher temp. ive used synthetic on my car since day one and now i have 111k on the clock and its boosted and my oil is still clean and i only burn about 1/4 of a qt between oil changes.
but with that amount of oil consumption that hes having i would almost think that he has blow by. but im not sure. the reason there may be no signs of it is cuz its gettin recirculated out thru the pcv and maybe even the breather tube on the valve cover. but than again dont quote me on that, its just my hypothesis. and im not sure how prone to blow by the 2az motors are.

Thanks for replies. If it is blow by how is Toyota about fixing the problem when it should still be on warranty?

everyone needs to not worry so much about 1qt oil consumption, It is not extreme remember this is a toyota engine designed for "low" fuel consumption and high mileage reliability, (it is a camry engine after)

The most inexpensive way to do this is to allow the engine to use more oil. The two main places oil is burned is from valve seals and piston rings. This is normal and not a cause to worry, it protects you from having engine problems, and gives you an engine that can last a long time if properly taken care of.

I've started to lose 1 qt. of oil about a month ago. Taking my car back to Toyota cause they could find the leak that was coming from the block and head. And I lost another quart in 2weeks for my last visit to Toyota.
