Default Mishimoto Radiator problem

I just installed my Mishimoto radiator today and I followed the instructions in the Scion manual but for some reason the o-ring around the drain plug got fried. I was reving the car to 2k-2.5k with the heat on, waiting for the fans to come on but it never happened. I got out of the car looked in the engine bay, noticed a little smoke, and then radiator fluid on the ground. I turned the engine off, and then turned the key to on and the fans came on. So I imagine since the thermo in the car was in the middle as usual and the fans came on, that I did everything right. Has anyone had this issue before or know what I should do about it?

Mishimoto radiators suck when it comes to holding fluid. Its a very very common problem. On mine, I had to upgrade o-rings and wrap the plugs twenty times with teflon to stop them from leaking.

Awesome... I swapped the petcock on the top with the one with the broken o-ring but it still leaks. Hurray for doing the same work multiple times.

Wow this is good info since that was a direction I was going to take with my engine... cooling. Despite the flaws to the Mishimoto connections, does it do a better job then stock radiator?

most definitely, but I would look into the KOYO. I got it installed and running about a month ago and everything is working perfectly. I forgot to post results and pics, will do soon. Let's just say that my highway temps are a 177 degrees rock solid. I got it from the sponsored sales here, they had a good discount on it along with the 1.3 bar rad cap. Received everything in four days.

Do not use the Mishimoto o-rings, go to the parts store and get the flat style of rings, they seal better. Use teflon tape around them and you'll be good to go. The ones that ship with the rad suck and leak out the butt especially when they crack so replace them before it happens.

KOYO didn't have theirs out when I bought the Mishimoto but it's a modest upgrade. I thought I would see much lower temps. I upgraded the thermostat to a lower temp, I had the Mishimoto rad with the stock fan shroud and temps were low. When I bought the Mishimoto fan shroud with their fans temps were higher than with the stock shroud. You gain the looks but lose some effectiveness. Since I don't want to pull back off my exhaust manifold i'll stick with the current setup but if I ever remove the manifold again i'm upgrading the mishimoto fans to another brand.

I figured I'd update this thread. Mishimoto sent me a new petcock and the new ones will be metal going forward.

Yes the Koyo are awesome. They are an OEM manufacturer for many companies and their units show.
