Default Red-Line on a 2007?

I have a 2007 tC (automatic transmission - no engine mods) got 1,500 miles on it. I was driving on the interstate watching my RPMs. So I'm cruising at 70mph and my RPMs are maybe 2-2.5, I really dont know what gear I'm in (I'm no good at counting the gears). When I floor the gas pedal (I was passing someone) - the RPMs shoot up real quick - hitting as high as 6 .. and redline is just above 6 (I guess like 6.2). This is how the car drives. I didnt redline but to me it seems awfully dangerously close. I wonder if I didnt ease off the gas if it would keep going up. Should I be concerned or have this looked at?

well i realize it will shift for me - i just never watched close enough (or noticed) something getting THAT close to redline. And i know what happens - it usually involves bucking and for a brand new car to redline (IF IT DOES) based on not-so-eradic driving worries me. I thought maybe there could be a timing or computer thing not set appropriately. Do other tC owners notice similar high RPMs when gunning the gas before shifting of gears.

well, when you gone the gas, the transmission knows to lower the gear, since you're looking for more power. Lower gears = higher engine speed. Auto trannys are set up to shift at 6250rpm and when they shift at 6250rpm, assuming you are still gunning it, it will only shift down to 4000rpm

ummmm...

cars are supposed to go up close to redline, regardless of if it's an auto or a stick.

the worst thing that will happen is that you'll hit the rev limiter (which wont happen in an automatic anyways). The car isnt going to just explode if it hits the redline

Default auto tranny

that sounds like an answer to me. Thanks man. Its good to know that my tranny forces the next gear at 6.250 - this is right below redline.

It's fine to redline the car, I just wouldn't do it every single day. You will have difficulty "hurting" the motor even with semi-heavy use.

Our rev limiter is considered a "soft" limiter, in that it cuts off ignition.... Over-reving is much more gentle than an older motor that cuts fuel.
