Default Shifting Problems with 08 TC

I have encountered this many times now, I don't know if fourth and second gear are just close or what. I aggressivly shift from third to fourth sometimes and always go into second gear with Im sure soon to be tranny damage. Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem?.?.?.

How is the shifting non-aggressive? Are you able to get into the gear successfully?

what the hell are you doing? aggressively shifting from 3rd to 4th means you are going over 70 mph, which can land your butt in a sling in northern virginia. now i know that you can sometimes mess up the 2nd to 3rd gear shift, but messing up 3rd to 4th? and going into second, yeah, your going to blow your engine up, and your warranty does not cover acts of stupidity on the drivers behalf. 2nd and 4th are not close to eachother, they are next to eachother, but but there is no way you should be mixing them up. is this your first manual transmission car or something?

You are using far too much arm movement in your shifting, and inadvertently pulling toward your body which could be why you’re having this problem. You also could be sitting too far back from the wheel for your height or have the seat leaned back too far.

Practice the motion slowly and smoothly using your hand, wrist, & small amount of elbow. Remember you don't need your shoulder to move the shifter properly. Look into the purchasing the TRD short shifter also if you enjoy "aggressive" shifting, it's made for that kind of driving.

Hey i learned to drive stick one day 3 1/2yrs ago on a mercury cougar. I wasnt very good. Flash forward to march 07 when i bought a 5spd tC. Basically i was learning all over again. i knew the concept of it i just had to relay that to my feet and hand. I had so much trouble getting started but once i got going it was cake. Except when i felt like gunning it on the on ramp around a corner i did what you did. Damn that motor roared. Not good. I did it like once more but it was inexperience. Just be careful and take your time until you have it down. Just pull straight back not towards you. But be careful on 2nd to 3rd i still miss that occasionally when getting on it. But i did just get a TRD quickshifter free. i won it. It makes shifting alot easier. GL

i learned how to drive stick just after i signed the paper work and handed over the keys. stalled it 4 times trying to get out of the dealership parking lot. it felt like crap but by the time i got home, 15 miles or so. i was good. by the 3rd day it felt like i have been doing it for years. i have only gone from 3rd to 2nd once and it let me know fast.
just picked up a short shifter and it feels much better.

just dont go into 1st unless you really wanna break something. going into 2nd wont do as much damage as you might think, thats if you corrected your error quickly.

Well I think the problem is that I sit back too far... I don't drive it often, maybe once every two weeks. I drive my S10 which is a four speed manual so it is like learning how to drive it everytime I get into it. My first car was a stick back in 1997, a 1991 Toyota Celica GTS and every car in between so I am very familiar with manual trannys and if I want to drive my car agressivly I can do so because its my own and I pay the note not you DRAX! LOL

the question you asked is if anyone else had any problems accidentally shifting from 3rd to 4th..
and i can at this point assume that it's just you... you shift straight down... it's gotta be your arm movement and you applying sideways pressure towards you.

perhaps change your grip on the shift ****, and not hold it so much like a pistol at that point... no manhandling the ****!

also, a short shifter may help, along with improve the overall feel of shifting.

never had this problem. lol

i don't even know how you could accidentally do it either. 4th is straight down. when i go into 2nd from 3rd when i'm approaching a red light or whatever, it's a clear effort to go down and towards the left. i don't know what you're doing?

I sometimes experience this too. I thought it was only me, as if i wasnt pressing the clutch down all the way, but I always hit the floor when i go to shift, so it seemed strange to me. This has only happened to me twice, once to 2nd and another to 3rd, but they were both on abnormally cold days.

As far as missing 2nd, that is odd....the only time i missed a gear was going into 3rd the first time i had my car and drove it at night. When I shift between 1 and 2, i put my hand on the right of the shifter and push left. when i go to 3 i just move it diagonally. when i go to 4, i center my hand and just pull back. never had a problem like yours since. So maybe your shifting problem is you, but it will become part of the transmission too if you keep grinding those gears
