Yeah thats true. I miss my gs-r, vvt-i has some good points though. I do wish Toyota had something similar to vtec, vvtl-i is slightly closer but its basically the same set up just a different design.

There are a number of different implimentations of VTEC.... VVTL-i is very similar. They both adjust valve timing based on driving conditions. The extra lift component is what has a specific RPM engagement point. Not sure how VTEC works these days. Originally it was just two seperate cam lobes per valve. Each lobe had its own rocker arm but only one actuated the valve. Above a certain RPM a pin locked the two arms together so when the larger cam profile actuated its arm, the arm actually pushing the valve acted with it. This is a very rough description so if I used the wrong terminology don't shoot me. Besides, they probably do it a bit differently these days. Not sure how the VVTL-i works on Toyotas.... but man that extra lift feels nice when you hit 6500 on the 2ZZ engine... VVT-i of course is just variable timing on the valve actuation.... no lift and no RPM set point.....

vvt-i isn't like vtec, theres not a set rpm nor is it designed for performance.

you are in vvt-i right around 2,000rpm but it can and usually is a constant system. Its job is to adjust with driving habits, to deliver best results with economy and performance mixture.

Where as v-tec and i-vtec is designed strictly as a performance guide, and is set at a specific rpm and does not change without a vtec controll or stand alone.
I know vvti and vtec are diffrent all I ask was when does it start engaging or altering the cam? I know its on a sprocket at the end of the camshaft and uses oil pressure to change the time the cam opens and closes.

vvt-li > vvt-i...why couldnt they give us lift ?!!? i think the only car toyota makes with lift is the celica gts. lift is very similar to the i-vtec that comes in the rsx-s. as far as the i-vtec that comes in the base rsx's, they dont really help much because they enable at such low rpms you dont even notice. the type-s activates in a much higher rpm.
