Precision Turbos
Whats going on guys have not posted in quite a while been busy with other stuff life throws at you. Well to get back on topic im sure this has been discussed i searched but it was kinda mixed with other stuff i wanna know what the deal id with Precision Turbos. Im using the precision 5557 on my kit but i know soe people who have had probs with them. My car smokes sometimes but its not too too serious at all sometimes u have to be lookin at the exhaust sometimes u will see it a bit from a stop light. Now i know those are symptoms of a turbo going bad but my question is how long are these turbos lasting cuz i have had it on the car for about 12k but i know its getting oil properly and eveything and do not go much into boost as i have been making adjustments n fixing stuff on the car.
My other question is people who have had issues with them please lmk what ur feedback is. People who currently run them and have no issues please give me ur feed back as well.
I have also heard that to rebuild them you have to send it back to precision since they wont sell the parts to anyone is that true?

Is your turbo Ball-Bearing? I talked to a precision rep. at Imports Vs. Domestics in MD this past year about re-building a turbo I bought for cheap. I was told you have to send the turbo in and they have to replace the whole center section. He did say, however, that they get their center sections from Garrett. Everything else is made by precision. He also told me that you can send your turbo in to them, and for like $60 they'll go through it and check shaft play, and clearances, and gaskets and let you know if the turbo needs a re-build or if it's ok. I've not had the chance to run this turbo on my car yet, so I cannot give you an input as far as that goes, but that's what I know about precision turbos if that helps you out at all.

i had a PTE 5857 on my simple kit and i cooked it after about 6K miles. they said i wasnt letting it cool down properly but i sat in my car for at least 2 minutes after driving. so i don't know but i know a lot of people love precission and i dunno about them getting their CHRA's from garrett last i heard was they get their parts from china.
i havnt had any issues with my 5857 but i was reading a thread on supra forums about a guy running a huge precision turbo and sent it in and they fixed it with no issues. good luck with the issues man
hmm i wonder whats the deal with them i have also heard about them using garret parts and that for the jb turbos like the one i have you can jus replace the parts with garret parts and everything will be good as new but again im not sure. I know at some point i am going to have to take it off and ge it checked out at a local rebuild shop that does good work but man i have another turbo on the car before with my zpi kit for almost 15k and i had not one issue it didnt smoke at all but too small for my plans so i obv upgraded to a much better kit. So what do you all think from the symptoms i have told you all? There is some oil in the ic pipes but i have not taken off to check but u can tell its a bit Also the port on the turbo how do u guys run that vaccume i have not had it in which causes a boost leak but it seems to not have been sealed too well and oil comes out from where it screws in not alot but u can tell it seems out a bit. Is there supposed to be teflon on it?
maybe your seals are starting to go bad, i always thought that precision was just a side company from garrett but i know alot of people have been using precision on different car makes because they have stepped there game up as far as quality goes so im a bit confused. i tried to find the thread i was reading on the other forums but no luck. and also i think thendawg had a problem at one point with his smoking as well. i forgot what the little thing was called that he ordered for it but basically what was happening the turbo was getting to much oil goin thru it. maybe he will chime in.
well i jus got off of the phone with Descendant and got some good intell as far as those turbos and stuff it could very well be the turbo i am going to check my plugs as well as my valves to make sure that there not wet and taking in oil. But its one of those things that i have heard of them going bad quick so thats y i posted and also i think it could be useful for future refrence.
I have a journal bearing 6262 and it had been smoking every once in awhile, but the valve seals on this head were in ____ poor shape and could have been causing excessive crankcase pressure. New head and everything is in, so once I get her fired up this weekend well see if thats all it was. FYI any turbo shop can rebuild a Precision journal bearing turbo, DBB, as far as I know you either have to send it to Precision or buy a replacement center cartridge.
please keep my updated on that my motor has 33k on it been boosted for 23k its an 09 so im not sure it would be the valve seals but hey you never know i mean i jus wouldnt think it would be but i am going to try and take a look this weekend in the ic pipes clean my intake filter and breather filter which are dirty and prob clogged so maybe that will solve the issue.
hey thendawg do you have a map that i could possibly use if you want pm me and i can give u details to see if my car runs better than the map i have on it now i can tell you all about it or pm me for my # that b best way i know u been through alot with ur car so i figure a pretty good person to talk to other than the usual ppl i talk to such as pete (tcpete) and mike (elevationtc)

Feel free to pm me about the map. As for Precision turbo's well, we'll see. If it was the excessive crankcase pressure causing the issue, well than other than that the 6262 has been a great turbo, just not sure if its worth the price tag.
Will do so more on the car I know my car was leaking some oil around thr vc a noticable amount so I pulled ther vc off and there is no where on the gasket where I can see that it it damaged I'm still going to buy a new one as I have already pulled the vc off. Another thing is that my intake air filter was so dirty when I cleaned it it was not draining water until after I cleaned it so that's how dirty it was could be that one of my issues I'm assuming yes. Another thing is my breather filter wasn't doing ____ either since that was clogged with oil (I usually clean each oil change 3k but hadn't cleaned in 9k. Any insight on that?
I will pm u hopefully today once I put the car back together and running

They don't use Garrett chras anymore. They lost their contract with Garrett 3 years ago. they use China chras now.

I talked to a rep at PTE and they said 2010 was the last year of garret internals they said they are using "their own parts" I put that in quotes cuz I speculate how good their parts are. But I'm sure u can still rebuild with garrett internals for rebuild.
I was not aware that they are not using Garrett center sections anymore. I wonder if you could still just order a center section from Garrett and use it? Anyone have any input on the newer Precision turbos? Wonder how their in-house centers will match up to Garrett?
