no, it better move a little, it needs room to expand and contract, metal expands under heat.

BUT. depending on the amount it could be excessive

i had the turbo rebuilt under the turbonetics warrenty. i got it back after it was rebuilt and balanced. I ended up having my piston rings fried. Car was smoking blue tint from exhaust and smoke came out of oil cap and spark plug hole. Oil was bubbling out from the exhaust side of the turbo. Are those normal symptoms of piston rings fried? And i DONT think that a turbo would go bad after starting the car to get tuned after its rebuilt and balanced...

having the same problem i had - probably your ring landings are gone - if its smoking badly from dispstick and crnakcase vent. The blowby will actually prevent the oil from draining back into the pan and it will go out through the turbo's oil seals. Seems to me to be exactly what youre experiencing - turbo is fine - the motor is not

but how come there was "little" shaft play on the intake side of the turbo? i mean it was just rebuilt and balanced a few days before i put it on. I noticed "small" in and outs

but how is it possible that a turbo which was just rebuilt and balanced go bad after one dyno run while tunning?

If it was properly primed with oil then no, if it wasn’t then yes. End play is normal to an extent the turbochargers are manufactured that way so the oil flowing in the bearing should take up all of the slack assuming it isn't excessive. Put oil in the oil feed line fitting rotate the shaft and you should feel almost all of the end play gone.

if it was balanced and rebuilt by a reputable shop, and builds boost and doesn't smoke why would you have checked shaft play in the first place?
