Default Street Legal Turbo? (in Ohio)

I am pretty sure that at some point in the future I will either add the TRD supercharger or a Turbo. I would like to go with a turbo however I keep hearing that there are no emissions legal Turbos available and I want to keep my car as legal as possible.

I know that a lot of turbo kits come with exhaust pipes that delete the CAT(s) so is if I just keep an exhaust with the CAT will I be able to pass emissions tests? Or is there something else I need to do?

If just leaving the cats on is not enough to keep my car legal would it be possible to assemble a complete kit on my own that would keep me legal?

Also how would I take care of ECU stuff that comes with forced induction?

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I don't mind going with the TRD Supercharger, but that's the normal, and i'd rather go with something that isn't normal.

We don't even have regular emission checks in ohio so i wouldn't even be worried about it. A more important thing to consider is if you want to keep your warranty or not. Most kits come complete with fuel and engine management.

I really wish I knew that before. So does this mean that if a cop pulls me over or something they can't look under the hood or tell me to take off any aftermarket parts?

Sorry, I have no idea what the laws about these kind of things are in Ohio, I guess I keep getting confused by the Cali people

It's a federal offense to remove a working catalytic converter. Federal means all 50 states. By installing a turbocharger, you remove the catalytic located in the OEM header, thus making your car illegal for street use.

The odds of you getting bent over for it vary between states. CA? They'll throw the book at you. Ohio? Probably not so much. Just be aware that it can happen and don't be surprised or ____ed off if it does.

Ok, that makes sense. two more questions that I can think of right now.

1) is it possible to turbo my tC without removing any cats?(on the header or exhaust)
2) How can a cop prove that I don't have the OEM header?

Dezod's kit comes with the option of a Random Tech cat on the downpipe for only an extra $45 bucks. Simple. Legal.

Here's a pic of the actual cat+downpipe on the kit:

Is the Dezod Kit CA legal, too? Probably not, but hey, here's hoping.

Nope.... and removal of a stock cat and addition of a A/M cat isn't legal in all instances as well though... But, you can have a precat welded on to attempt tp appease the neccesary parties from almost any of the local SL turbokit sellers if requested.

Which would even state that anyone that puts a header on their car is illegal as well...

For $45 you can have a "cat" upgrade, and not worry about failing smog every, or if a cop pulls you over, he's probably not going to give you a hard time regardless. Just keep your racing on the track and there's no sense in worrying

BTW- The Cat only took back 4whp so adding it will not make your car much slower at all.

I've personally had two cars with no cats I live in ohio never had any problems. Cops in ohio aren't really concerned with it though it is illegal to not run one. Like stated above if you lived in cali you would be in some serious trouble.

^^ Same here, I wouldn't worry about it at all as long as you're not planning on moving to CA. Just run a decent muffler and you won't be suspect at all. I've been driving in OH for 12 years and never once had any kind of emissions test.

From what I know the laws here i MI are the same as ohio as far as E checks. Ive been pulled over 3 times since my turbo and Ive never been asked to pop my hood. And you can see my intercooler plain as day. I think you'll be fine.

Ohio doesn't care about the atmosphere so why would they care about emissions?

Cali is the most stringent of cat offenses and replacement. They deem NO aftermarket cat is legal at all on OBD2 vehicles, however I have had numerous customers pass testing with RT cats on turbo set-ups, and crazy other apps too.

I was telling someone this the other day, you will probably fail a visual (if the inspector wants to be an arss), but pass a sniffer fine.

Each state has their own regulation of laws regarding emissions. FL for example, does not have one. There are so many catless cars running around here, it's sick. Cops do not care.
