The standard '06 HU (one **** HU specifically, but the other has it too) has an auxiliary mini jack input (for iPods or other audio devices).
I believe this jack (on your dash) has at least 3 wires connected directly to the HU's connectors.

Would you remember which of the HU's plug it would be that connects to the center arm rest?

not sure if this will help. this is all i could find in the wiring diagrams for the ipod connector. i also put the pic's of the Z4 (ipod connector) and S20 (aux connector) so you can tell what they look like:

Can any of you guys with an 06 and an aux jack poke at the pins in the back of the aux jack both with and without a stero plug inserted and tell me what you see. There are four pins, L+,R+, GRND, and one other one. What I'm trying to figure out is what that other one does. It does something to let the radio know that something is plugged into it. I'm sure the Service Manual has something about that.

Are you trying to make your own Aux in? I have been thinking about trying to do that because:
1) I am cheap
2) I like playing with electronics
3) My FM modulator sucks

I have been wondering if it is as simple as soldering some wires and connectors together, or if it much more complex than that.

That's what I'm doing. BUt I need the above info... I'm almost there... just need some help from an 06 owner or someone with access to the service manual can look up the troubleshooting section of the aux input circuit.

acutally I have the description of the jack I'm looking for (s20) but I have no idea about the jack itself... somewhere in the manual it should go and explain how the AUX jack works. I.e. some sort of description of the signals.
