I didn't do a custom mount, just used the base supplied with the unit. But I did a really clean install right by the driver side pillar. Ran the wire behind the dash, so only about an inch of it can be seen

Here's where I have mine mounted...
It's in the top left corner there, doesn't obstruct visibility really at all. I deliver pizzas for a part time job so I'm constantly using it. Very easily within reach also. I've got it wired into the sunroof harness so no wires running anywhere, and it comes on by itself.
Can't see it outside the car really either. I have a 5% strip on the windshield. So I don't worry about theft.

Here you go, the mount sticks to the inside wall of the cubbyhole and the GPS sits in front of the stick.
It blends in with the silver and black from the center console. Doesn't attract too much attention.
Oh yeah, ... don't mind the dirty floor mats, I took this pic BEFORE washing and cleaning the car.

Wow! Those both look really nice. Thanks for posting. I would love to do the cubby hole, but my shifter is a pretty large stick grip from an F-4 Phantom, so no dice there.

I like the windshield one, did you just cut the charger harness?
