Default Head Unit Questions

I have a 2005 tc and was looking at installing an aux jack which is not offered from scion. Best buy claims to sell a wiring harness that will add an aux jack but it costs $100. So i was looking at just getting an aftermarket head unit, but i have heard that i wont be able to close the cover with a non factory head unit. can anyone confirm or deny this, and has anyone used the harness from best buy?

I have aftermarket pioneer it will close. The head units where the door will not close are the ones that lift up and out which is a waste of money.

i think you can get any of the headunits and have the door close..you just have to mount the headunit farther back on the brackets

Nope. Not the 'o5 HUs. iPod intergration wasn't until the 'o6 HUs.

Unless you're looking for a Navi/DVD unit, the door will close fine. You can even use the stock HU brackets for the aftermarket HU. I have an Alpine 9856 HU in my 'o5 and everything is peachy.

For Under $200 you can find a nice HU with iPod intergration which is much better than a wiring harness IMHO.

This is not true. Many people on here have had to modify the bracket to get "normal" headunits to fit. I need to modify mine because my "normal" Kenwood deck wont fit in either top or bottom slot with a funtional door. It's stuck open till I get time to mod the bracket. I'm guessing your assuming all Nav/DVD units are double din which they aren't. Most units have this problem due to the raised areas under the cover and the way the mechanics of the door work. All you need to do is make new holes in the bracket alittle bit more back and flatten the alignment bumps.

^^But if you research the HU in question on a reputable site like crutchfield.com they will tell you if it will fit, not fit, or need to modify the brackets/door. Lastly, I know not all Single DIN Navi/DVD HUs work with the door because of the motorized screen that flips out. (If it has one.) This is the first time I've heard (or read) a "normal" Kenwood HU needing modification done to the (stock) brackets. Not calling you out, just haven't heard anything before.

By "normal" I mean single DIN. Yes I did have to modify the stock radio brackets so the door would close. I ended up with it in the top slot and have my sat tuner in the lower. It ended up being about 1/2" back from stock because at 1/4" the door would push the face release button. It was alittle tricky to get holes to work that far back but it works fine.

Hey! Click my signature to look at my Kenwood DPX701. I'm including the drilled brackets that allow it to fit, along with the Toyota wiring harness required. It has auxillary and Ipod support.

Hate to sound like a salesmen, but i'm looking for some money. Who isn't...
