Head Unit Suggestion
If you save a few dollars more, this would be an excellent iPod friendly H/U:

You can get them on ebay near your budget.
You'll also need:
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...492523,00.html
The above HU has all the DSP you'll need to fine tune your system (EQ/Time Alignment/xover). The remote, and user interface/display is VERY user friendly. I really can't say enough good things about this unit.
Since you asked about Alpine...They make a few iPod friendly units, this one being the least expensive:
http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...model=CDA-9857
You'll also need this:
http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...model=KCE-422i
If ALL you're interested in is iPod performance, Apple's worked with Alpine to develop this model:
http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...model=iDA-X001
I'm not sure about it's price though. It's the only HU currently on the market that utilizes the DIGITAL output from the iPod, and then runs the signal through much better Burr Brown DACs.

Truthfully, you won't get a decent iPod-capable unit without spending over $200. I purchased a Kenwood unit about a year ago for $275 and then got the iPod adapter for another $50, and it's great....but that's $325...You can find something cheaper, but I'm not sure it would be a good purchase. I actually just stuck with the scion stock iPod unit and that works great for me because I still can use my steering wheel controls.

I have a kenwood unit very similar to this one in my MR2 that I mentioned in my previous post, and if you couple that with the ipod cable, it's not a bad combo. The Kenwood GUI isn't the best, but it not bad. Alpine and Pioneer have the best iPod GUI's in my opinion. But that Kenwood unit gave me the best sound in comparison to other units in the same cost category.
