Looking for a component system
right but he said when it was set at 80 it was too high, so wouldn't it be set lower if he was getting more lows than when it was set at 80 hz? so wouldn't his be set at like.... 30-50hz?
sorry for the threadjack just trying to clarify and become more informed

Yeah. I don't think he's set it to 80hz properly. I think he overshot it by a big margin, and took out too much bass, past the midbass region, and into the lower mids.
My guess is he didn't have the HPF set at all initially, and thus the speakers couldn't handle it, and were popping.
I dunno what else to tell him. Sweep the xover higher 'till the speakers stop popping. We don't know how loud he's listening to the system either. You can't expect coax's to re-style your hair...
Some food for thought. A speaker's compliance (movement in/out) is FOUR times greater each octave lower you ask it to play while maintaining a given output. There's a HUGE difference between 40hz and 80hz, and thus the speaker can mechanically play louder at 80hz.

yeah when I set my amp to highpass and to 80hz, its all super high pitch tremble-sounding, absolutely no bass. I also put the gains to lowest possible and its still clipping.
BTW, this is on the stock hu on xA setting. I turned the tremble to -5 and bass to 0. Im tuning it at 45. Does that matter?
(I know I know, get a new HU that has a wider EQ band. I will in time. Im just trying to work my best with what I have.)

I'm currently still using stock HU & speakers. LOC to active crossover to small amp powering stock fronts (rear disconnected). Using a 2nd order HPF at 80Hz, they get very loud yet still sound clean, and there's plenty of midbass to blend well with my 10" sub in the hatch (3rd order LPF at same 80Hz), such that you'd can't localize the sub.
So I'm not sure what's going on with your system, as what you're attempting shouldn't be a problem, and it can provide decent performance. My gains are set so that I never have the stock HU at more than 40, and I believe that may be the point where it's SQ output really begins to degrade (based on my testing at the time, which was simply to listen for noise/distortion), so you might want to consider that. My system is already very loud at ~24 on the HU, and I rarely listen to it past 30, so you might want to try resetting your gains with the HU at a lower output level.
And as others have said, get a sub if you want bass, the stock door speakers really weren't meant to provide any SQ at anything below 60Hz at low volume.
