ALL NEW 2011 Scion tC coming Sept. 2010
Even if its not efficient around the HP range, the tQ is there. Hondas make hp, Toyota makes tq. Thats what it has watered down to over the years. Toyota is capable of making a decent power with a small displacement. The celica was 1.8 I believe and making around 180+
2.7 sub 200hp motor is horrendous, 2.7 is out of bounds for a 4-cylinder motor anyway, it should certainly be bumped up to 6 with that type of displacement. At least the tq will be very close to the hp but still sub 200 for both. The tC was never designed to be a performance car, more of something that's all show and no go...it will remain all show and no go.
I don't see the 1AR being as efficient as the 2AZ for boost, the compression is actually increasing instead of decreasing from 9.4:1 (2AZ) to 10:1 (1AR).

The tC (2AZ) was NEVER designed for power, just because support is there does not mean it is safe.
It doesn't take much lurking around to find various threads that clearly depict that it isn't for power. Toyota with their failure of the SC shows it wasn't intended to make power.
The platform simply isn't made for it, platforms that are can handle slight detonation with no problems, the 2AZ cannot.
The tC is meant to be all show, that's what is meant by tuner. This is evident when Scion introduced the Spec tC, it had a solid glass roof in case someone wanted to add a carbon fiber roof; it had cheaper seats, in case someone wanted to swap seat; cheaper steering wheel so it can be swapped; cheaper wheels so they can be upgraded, you see it still came with the same motor and transmission though right, because it wasn't meant to be changed, there was no option for it come come motor-less.
It isn't to say there aren't some heavily modified tC's out there, Scion sponsors some of them, PTUNING, Dezod, Descendant, etc have some out there as well but they're in a position to handle scenarios when something goes wrong. The run of the mill tC owner cannot fork over the money for a new motor when a rod is thrown clear through the hood.
Don @ Dezod synopsis of the 2AZ:

Inevitably, the rule of thumb, to ****** a line for the Notorious BIG, "Mo power, Mo problems", this is especially the case with the tC. Someone can do everything right, as far as forced induction is concerned and take the car to be tuned by the god of tuning and still walk outside to a blown head gasket.
Just look at the Toyota lineup that uses this motor, it isn't meant for power at all. It's meant to get you from point A to point B safely and reliably, not quickly.
