When I shut my hatch, I use both hands and evenly close the lid. It seems to lessen the rattles, or stops it altogether.

Well, if you go too far to the top, those execs don't really care. Who was is the VP that was quoted in a reply about all the reported rattles, "...they think their driving around in a 30,000 Lexus..."? That was messed up...

I have a newer tC, the later VIN shows my struts have already ben replaced with the newer ones. But in my case, and I guess most others. It's not the right strut, but the 'window' area right above it that is generating the noise for me. Simply snap off the strut and try the steps below if you want..
Open the rear hatch and grab it with both hands and gently rock it back and forth. You should hear it creak. Now try it with a friend and one of you pinch the area in the picture below, where the metal sandwiches the rear glass.

When I pinch the glass and have the rear hatch rocked back and forth, the sounds goes away! This may have something to do with an intallation clip being left in, or the window epoxy not being applied correctly, or something...

Marshall.... just wanted to let you know I tried your window thingy and there was no noise. This is my first post. Bought my '06 seventeen days ago and the rear started rattling about two miles from the dealer. It's been back to the dealer twice and now Scion has issued a case number. Hopefully this won't be a long road to nowhere! My noise almost sounds like it's coming from the tail light area (when laying in the back with a friend driving). Sounds like a toolbox or a rat running through duct work. Otherwise love the car. Comment from Scion CEO saying what we expect for the $ irritates me. I'm not doing 115 mph with the sunroof open, I'm driving around my neighborhood at 35 mph. Before the scion I've had a Honda Civic ('77), Escort, Escort GT, Capri, Cavalier Z24 and a Pontiac Transport... all CRAP cars with no rattles...UGH!

Not to justify manufacturer defects, but the echo wasn't a hatch, and was barebones and very minimilistic in parts.

have any of you put foam tape (1-1.5 inch) on the bumper stops of the hatch.. these are on either side of the hatch, not the body.. they are on the left and right sides of the hatch (not the back of the hatch.. the sides)

it was posted here awhile ago..

just stick some foam tape in there and let me know if the noise is gone.. for some of us this has worked fine...

yaris/echo hatchbacks are known to rattle. most hatchback rattle unfortunatly. I am sure if you ended up in a trunk of your average sedan you will heard the rattle, but enough material will separate it from the cabin that you wont here it there.

i have yet to sit in an hatchback that makes less noises than sedan...

My xB liftgate doesn't rattle (xA owners also dont post about hatch rattles). Maybe it's too vertical. Go lemon law instead of waiting for Toyota or the BBB. Check your local state lemon laws.

it didnt rattle when i test drove it
I'm just saying that if it rattles because its cheap maybe they should have left out a few features and spend the money on a better hatch

Do you guys with the hatch rattle have any kind of spoiler? I have the pedestal spoiler and have taken my tc in to the dealer twice now, and they have not fixed a damn thing. They told me they insulated the trim pieces and it was still loud as ____. Then they said my rattle was coming from the spoiler with I call huge BS about. Any actual success with non dealer attempted fixes? The best part of it all: didnt fix a thing, they had the car all day, and they gouged the paint in the panel under the door. Needless to say they are not by far on my good list!!!
