jmo, but not many people remember that "rice" came from "race inspired cosmetic enhancement" or a facsimile thereof, meaning that one would add something that created an "illusion" that the car had been enhanced performance-wise. in effect, people pretended to have a "boy-racer" car by adding stickers, wings, fake this or that, to convince others the car had real performance modifications when it didn't.

the term has since morphed into any mod that isn't a performance mod or changes the look to a more "mainland" japanese style. this really is a misnomer.

we all know "rice"; what you ordered on your tC is not rice, it is personalization.

btw, Dr_Isotope....i love the tails....i wanted the LEDs but didn't want the clear and yellow addition. i was gonna smoke the TYCs but i really like that look. i have a renewed respect for the TYCs with that overlay.

My only rule is that if you "rice" it out, it has to be a clean rice. Dropped, nice rims, tint, body kit and low profile spoiler. I think the new high spoiler and TYC rear lights are too ricey.

Actually rice was around WAY before "rice inspired cosmetic enhancement". Any vehicle made in Japan (including street bikes) used to be called rice by some simply from the fact that it came from Japan, period. Had NOTHING to do with mods, or any acronym. It was simply an ethnic phrase usually used in such ways as "rice rocket", "rice burner" , etc. The current meaning was morphed some so it didnt offend anyone from Japan, then again since everyone drives japanese cars anyway, so it became to be a synonym for "filler with little purpose", and then the retarted acronyms came out. I think people take stupid sayings WAY too personally IMO But now everyone acts like there is some sort of Meriam Webster definition for it.

I agree- do what you want. I can definitely say that I think some cars qualify as ricers... if it's grotesque

But i don't think that any of the stock options on the tC are so intense. I'd say classy.. what you do after you get your car is your business!

How can you call a sports car ricey? I don't get it. Even if someone put a bumble bee sounding exhaust, huge flame decals, huge wing meant to be on an F1 car, etc....how is that ricey? That's just what they like...

Someone enlighten me

Did someone bring up a sports car? I saw stuff about a tC and a neon, but no sports cars mentioned.

And, like the food, most people consider rice "filler", or un-necessary items that attempt to make a car look like a race car. Big wings (which serve zero purpose), etc.

and i quote wikipedia:

The term rice burner or rice car or ricer is a derogatory term most often referring to automobiles (usually economy cars but not limited to) that have the appearance of a high performance car, but often have little or no functional modifications applied, such as an improved engine, suspension, or brakes.

Everyone's taste varies so much from person to person that it is difficult to determine what someone can consider rice. Bear in mind, context is also an indicator of what a person may think of a given car. If I had a sponsored show car as my daily driver, I'm sure that a lot of people would say denigrating things about it in passing. I'm of the opinion that those same people would probably not even blink an eye if they saw the same car at a show. A personalized vehicle should matter to you first, as has been stated before. As long as you are happy with it, and it suits your style, then all should be well.

On a side note, one of the things that annoy me the most are cars that have issues, (like a dent, mismatched wheels, smoke out of the exhaust, etc.) with stickers and decals and a brand new massive wing. I guess I feel that modding a car, like building a house, must have a solid foundation for things to look right. If you take a POS and put some nice wrapping around it, with some shiny ribbons, it's still a POS and many people can smell that. Oh yeah, and I hate spinners with a passion. Every time I see one, I want to maim something.

my opinion, you don't have to turn on the led's...
tails (make sure you get your stockers back(you can swap them back if you don't like.

wheels, make sure you get the stockers back...you can swap or sell those...

i think you'll be ok.
Happy Birthday, and sorry, but thats the most ignorant thing i've ever heard. "RICE" though maybe its roots were in poking fun of Asian cars, has become a Generic term for ANY make/model car with cheesy mods. COME on! just because its sold in the US doesn't mean it can't be rice!!

Acura Integra's RXS's LExus' infiniti's...ALL USDM. And secondly, the Tc is MADE in japan, so technically its a japanese car..but whatever..when somebody calls your car "Ricy" their not calling it a ugly Jap car, they're just calling it an UGLY car period.

THere are plenty of Ricy Cavaliers Neons and focuses out there.

ANd unfortunately, the tc has become a magnet for ricers. Partly because its cheap and looks good, but mostly because all the manufacturers knew how big the market was going to be so everyone and their mother came out with a BILLION ricy little tc parts/mods (ie. side sills, B pillar applique, pedestal spoiler, mesh grills, horrible fog lites, LED's..the list goes on)..

Now ricer kids (i say this because most people grow out of that horrible phase by the time their 22-23ish) can just look down at a list of TC parts and figure out which one they can AFFORD, and go install it themselves. Recipe for a lot of ricy tc's.

That said...to each their own. If you want to do something to your car, be my guest. You can just ignore anyone who tells you it doesn't look good (although they're probably just trying to help) and be happy with YOUR car.

But again, if you rice it out, you have to expect you're gonna hear it from people. its all in good fun though.

I don't see how those items you listed are ricey. Perhaps a poorly done grill or about 50+ LEDs, but not those other ones. I guess everyone does have their own taste...

It really has to do with how well stuff goes together.. huge wings on a car just dont fit in any real way.. so they get deamed rice right off the bat.

I love to do asthetic mods as much as anything else, as long as it is clean. I dont know what leds and fogs he talks of, but I personally love the OEM fogs, they dont look like the other million fogs out there and look great IMO, absolutely nothing to do with "rice". He just doesnt like some fogs. And honestly, the blue gauges and console in my car fits in with the car about a million times better than the stock amber does.

I am HUGE on clean looking mods. I dont like body kits, spoilers, stickers, craptezza looking tail lights, or any of that. Even some of the more subtle kits turn me off some cause I know they will end up floppy and cracked. There are a few that have been done right as far as I am concerned.. but I still dont like them. But that is MY opinion. I plan to add my electronics mods I am currently working on to the gauges (which will be functional as well as awesome looking ), possibly try to do a good even looking full third brake light, the sound system, and that is it untill we get moved next year and I have a garage again. Then it will all be under the hood. Most likely buying a short block to build first.

But my point is, all of my stuff will be clean and fit together, I look at the whole car as a unit, and try to make sure it all flows well, which is why I stay away from what some call "ricey" mods. But that is just me, I could really care less what someone else thinks, especially some kid yelling rice at whatever they dont like, cause that is what most of it is. They dont like it so it must be rice... they are either young and dumb or old and boring as s#it, only liking stock, out of the box cars But either way, I try not to just go out talking trash on someone elses ride.. I may think it looks hideous, but I didnt pay for it either, so more power to them... I may laugh to myself.. but that is different

IMO mods are not rice as long as they offer some improvement to the performance of the car.

I find it real funny most of the posts regarding 'rice' are those NOT on the west coast..maybe I'm wrong.
