The only 'excuse' I've ever heard was that they needed to be able to see into your car. But, if you can have limo tint in back....and the cops pull you over from behind...then you could have an AK-47 in your hands and they wouldn't know until they got up to your nice clear front windows....and by then it's too late.

So stupid.
sorry to bump this, but i felt it important for people to know

The front windshield is not allowed to be tinted, as well as the sides because of night driving. The tint impairs your ability to see clearly at night. It IS a valid statement if you have LIMO tint which i did on an old car, I would have a hard time backing up, and doing lane changes at night, but the car came with the tint.

Same goes for the front windshield. But I have had my last 2 cars tinted, 35% on the front and I have no problem whatsoever driving at night.

That's not what I hear when the law is mentioned by cops. They don't care if you can see at night. If you can't see....you....roll down.....the window.

The most common answer I hear about why it's illegal is because of the gang's love for limo tint. So they outlaw all tint on front windows, letting people go blind and get sunburned by our increasingly damaging sun.

And since they pull you over from behind, and your back window can be as dark as you like....how exactly do the front windows matter?

ever notice how they shine their spot light into your rear view mirror? its to further light up the inside of your car (and so you can see them if you look back ) i dont know if this has to do with anything but its annoying getting blinded so it works.

I'll go you one better. I was driving down a FREEWAY AT NIGHT a while back and there was a cop on a side street, aiming his light back the other way, effectively half-blinding all the drivers going 60-70 mph.

They need to be able to see in from the sides. That has nothing to do with what happens when they pull you over. I'm talking about after you get pulled over. Where do the cops approach from? The rear? No, they approach the car from the side(s) and take a good look inside to see what you are doing before they engage you.

Last time I got pulled over at night, I put down my driver's side window expecting the cop to come over to talk to me. Instead, his partner first approached from the passenger side and shone his flashlight in through the closed window, practically blinding me. After that, the other cop came to talk to me on the driver's side. His partner took up a position at the front-right corner of my car and he continued to shine his flashlight on my face through the windshield the entire time. I guess because it was a dark area with no lighting.

Ummm dude? Where does the police car park when you're stopped? It parks BEHIND you. With no limit for tint on the back windows, you could have a machine gun waiting for that light and shoot through your back windows if you wanted to. It means nothing. They don't approach from the side, they approach from the back TO the sides. Not hard to figure out. If they approached from the sides, they'd get run over in the process because they'd be out in traffic.

the whole window tint thing is stupid if you ask me, i mean ya ok limo on the front is a little much, and it hinders your ability to drive at night, but if you have like 35% nothing wrong with that

CAlifornia is just plain stupid when it comes to things like that though, they do everything possible to milk every dollar out of us. making it almost impossible to obey every law and then of course tickets are inevitable
