cali is very strict.
where do you think 90 percent of those aftermarket part companies are located in the USA?
where do most street racing death incidents occur?

cops around my area drive with their front windows down I think it's so they know when a car driving nearby has an exhaust.

EXACTLY

So Cal = Worst place in the country to drive a modified car.

in the future when I plan to add a bit more power, Im going trd supercharger, so if I ever do get my hood popped Ill be in the safe zone. I know its a conservative upgrade, but I dont race anyway.

yeah dude livin here with a modded car is kinda hard at times. my car is no problem, but in Riverside where i go to school, theyll have random nights where theyll have checkpoints checking for fixe up cars and of course DUI's. But what ive heard is that if your car has at least 3 illegal mods that are visual, they have reason to pop your hood. so basically if you have a loud ___ exhaust, to dark of tint on the windows, and lets just say to bright of headligts, the cop is allowed to pull you over and check your entire car for illegal mods

i didn't feel like reading through 5 pages of this so if someone has mentioned this, please forgive me.

yes, it sucks that you got a ticket. BUT it's the law. umm.... C.A.R.B. legal??? doubtful that any turbo available to the tC is CARB exempt. yes, i suppose that it's the fact that it's a modification, but let's not forget that you probably have NO cats, which = illegal pollution output.

again, i know it sucks. i'm turbo'd in florida and hoping no cop pulls me over after driving behind me b/c my car STINKS. but there's nothing really to complain about; if i get a ticket ill just be like "well crap i got caught." that's basically it. you knew it was illegal and you got caught.

i'm not trying to say "turbos are bad" because, well, i have one and i have no regrets. i just don't see why people are going on and on about this subject. it's a clear-cut rule, even if it does single us car-modders out. nothing you can really do i guess except obey the ticket; i doubt many lawyers can get you out of it, and even if they get the pop-the-hood inspection thrown out, there's zero chance of you passing emissions

Wait wait wait....you have laws about how bright your HEADLIGHTS can be? Isn't their purpose to LIGHT UP the night so you can see to drive?

That cuts it. I am NEVER going to live in Cali again. That's BS.

Yeah, take a look at the CHP's "street legal" page: http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html

They've pretty much got laws to remove all of the fun and enjoyment out of owning a car. Here's the bit about headlight brighteness:

Illegal: Headlights brighter or higher wattage than those from the factory. You may be able to see better, but the lights are illegal (24011 VC).

And here I thought I'd seen everything.

I'll say it again. There is no way....NOOOOO WAY that I'm EVER going to live in Cali.

I'm not even really a modder but I still will not go there again. Some of those laws are so ridiculous it's just gotten to the point of being flat-out retarded.

For example: 'here' where I'm from EVERYONE suggests driving with your parking lights on if the weather is bad. But there it's "illegal." And for what? Because they say so? Because they're bored and decided they needed another law to generate money for the state?

Yikes. I'm glad now that I had an old '91 Carolla when I lived out there. I'm also glad I got the hell outta there as soon as I could.

One of the new laws last year was that you have to drive with your headlights turned on if it starts raining. So if there is a little shower and you don't turn on your headlights then you get a ticket. This year they are cracking down on cell phones. It will be illegal to call or text with a handheld phone come July 1st. On January 1st, they also made it illegal to smoke inside a car if you have kids in the car. I don't have any complaints about that particular law, but still, this place is starting to feel like a police state.

Too lazy to read the rest of the post but... You can get a ticket for aftermarket exhaust and intake. I think if the intake isn't carb legal (Doesn't have the carb sticker) Than you can get a ticket.

I went to a shop opening in the bay, the shop was called Redline, so everyones car was lined up and whatnot and all of a sudden a cop comes and starts giving any single person a ticket. He would be like, your car is too low, your exhaust is too loud and big, blah blah blah.

Incidents like these make me not want to mod my car.

I'm with ya. Hell, I'm already in the process of putting my plan in action....that plan is to keep my tC for 4 years, then trade it in on a brand new Mustang GT, with the trade, my payments will actually be about half what I'm paying now (long story). And then I'll just get the Shelby body kit (very legal since, it's on the Shelby).

The rebellion is thus: they don't want me having a tC with a measly 200 HP? Fine, I'll drive a Mustang GT with 300+ HP and then we'll see what's up. (Please don't cut me off when I have that car....I'd hate to ummmm....see you in my rearview. Oh, and did I forget to mention my laser jammer/radar detector mods?

Can you say stealth?

yeah i know some of those laws seem ridiculous but the truth is that Cali, especially So-Cal, has a very big population and unlike the east coast where there are subways, the main mean of transportation out here is driving our cars because of the potential of earthquakes. Because of this, they make these laws in order for the drive seem more comfortable. I mean everyone and there momma out here has their own car, and although i myself have a set of HID's, if everyone in So-Cal drove around with HID's, it would really suck to drive at night. So i guess theyre just trying to make the roads safer over here, because if you live her in Cali, you know theres a hell of alot of traffic and just too many cars on the road.

You'd think more cars and the need for safety would mean bright lights. If those headlights are so bad, why would they be allowed to be sold? That's like saying crack is illegal to use, but it's legal to sell.

I think the whole state is pretty screwed. The vehicle laws we're just the last straw. The self-defense laws (or lack thereof) were the first "straw."

Definitely never going to live there. It's a shame too, since I really like the bay area. Oh well, everyone needs a vacation spot I guess.

Yeah Texas doesn't care either. I mean they have the emissions laws and all that but I haven't seen anything about even half of what that CHP site said was illegal in Cali.

I know people who have been pulled over here for having an exhaust which is too loud, a stereo which is too loud, non-reflective corner markers, blue parking lights, blue-ish headlights, and lots more. I've personally had tickets for 18% tint and no front license plate. Oh, and also a ticket for going 75 on the freeway.

That's retarded. How can you be given a ticket for something the car CAME with? Soooooooo LAME.

And as for the tint, that's just as retarded. Cali is the SUNSHINE state and they say you can't have tint to protect yourself from the sun's rays? How dumb.
