Default FIXED: Sunroof/Headliner Plastic Rattle

I think I fixed all my hatch rattles, but a new rattle just developed last week. Something has started rattling in the sunroof area. I believe it's not the sunroof itself, but the retractable plastic sun-screen. It's extremely annoying, and it happens whether the screen is open or closed.

I am contemplating removing the sun-screen completely, but I can't be sure if that will solve the problem. Has anyone else experienced this one?

I had one that I could have sworn was coming from the sunroof but it is hard to pinpoint it when you are driving down the road. I might also add that I almost always drive alone. So a few days later I had someone in the passenger seat and was going to ask them to see if they could try to figure out where it was coming from, only problem is it never happened. So later that day it started rattling again and I FINALLY figured out that it was the passenger seat belt rattling between the door panel thing and the slider **** on the side of the seat to make it fold forward. I plugged it into the seat belt socket and it stopped rattling.

Now why it sounded like it was coming from the sunroof, I have no idea. Make sure you check out this possibility first as I hadn't heard anything about it before on here.

mine does it but the rear sunscreen thing. I think im able to stuff something under the headliner to stop it because if i put pressure back there it stops. now i just need to get off my lazy a$$ and do it.

Hmm, okay I will definitely check that out first. I once had a really loud knocking sound which I thought was coming from the roof, but I eventually discovered that the passenger seatbelt had become twisted and failed to reel in automatically, and the metal clip was swinging around behind the seat and bashing against a plastic panel.

On a related note, I am also getting a lot of clicking/rattling sounds coming from the driver's seatbelt clip while the seatbelt is connected and the car is in motion. Have you experienced this one? Every time I fix a rattle, it seems like another one starts.

I was thinking about using some foam tape in that area. Although I haven't been able to pin down the problem yet. It's hard to stretch all the way back to apply pressure to the rear roof area whilst driving.

So 2 or 3 months later, and I have finally fixed this annoying rattle. Although it sounded like the sunscreen, it was actually coming from all around the rim of the sunroof and moonroof openings. There are plastic pieces which "frame" the roof openings, and these pieces are able to move up and down over bumps, impacting against the roof itself.

The solution was these little babies from Ace Hardware:

http://www.acehardwareoutlet.com/(zzz2ag45fa4ndnii4r54za45)/ProductDetails.aspx?SKU=5089560

Best 3 bucks I ever spent. To perform the actual fix, I pried the fabric headliner away from the sunroof and moonroof openings and wedged some of these adhesive pads into the gaps where movement was occurring. I used about 16 in total, until there was no longer any movement when I applied pressure to the roof area around the openings.

I'm not sure if anyone else has ever experienced this same rattle, but if anyone needs a walkthrough then I can provide pics and more detailed instructions.

Problem solved, w00t.

Yeah I'll get some pics this weekend. It's a little bit hard to describe without pics, but in the meantime I will try...

The front section is the easiest to describe. If you are sitting in the driver's seat, look up at the front edge of the moonroof where it meets the headliner. There is a portion of the headliner between the moonroof and the sun visors which has a lot of freedom of movement. If you tap this part upwards with your hand then you should hear plastic rattling noises.

So once you identify the noisy part, the goal is just to deaden its ability to move. Get your fingers "behind" the edge of the headliner and pull it downwards and towards yourself as much as you are comfortable with. After you peel back the headliner a bit, you should be able to squeeze your fingers under the headliner and into the gap which exists between the plastic moonroof frame and the roof itself. The gap is maybe a quarter of an inch, so the objective here is to wedge these little foam and rubber tabs inside this gap, eliminating the freedom of movement. The process isn't pretty and takes a bit of trial and error. It took me about 20 minutes of working blind with my fingers trying to force the pads inside the gap. I think I only used 4 pads on the front section, and then repeat for the sides and the rear until you can no longer hear any sound when you tap on the headliner around the glass parts.

I kinda have this problem. There is this insanely annoying rattle of the front moonroof shade. I can make it go away just by putting my finger on it. It's right over the passenger seat. I'm gonna figure out a way to get rid of it cause it drives me NUTS. maybe some of those pads will work

So how did you fix your hatch rattle? I tried the electrical tape around the metal latch and the foam pads around the rubber stoppers, but it lasts for like 2 days and starts up again. None of the other methods I've seen here have worked for me.

Actually, the hatch rattle seems to come back for no reason. Just when I think I've fixed it, it's back again. I just used all sorts of combinations of foam tape and electrical tape, and it was gone for a couple of months at one point. Now it's back.

Yeah, same here. Oh well, I'll keep messing with it. I had an annoying glove box rattle that I fixed similarly to what you did with the sunroof, just need to figure out a way to fix the $%&*ing hatch rattle...

Oh yeah, the glovebox rattle. Mine was rattling from being too loose in the top-left corner, but some adhesive foam fixed that.
