GOTTI™'s SAGA | Do you have bearing failure? Tapping? Read!
Alright everyone.. I dont know who has actually kept an eye out on this thread or not.. but.. there has now been 3 tC's now that have all had the same exact problem with their rod bearings, scoring, and having to clean and replace the short block. 3 out of XXX,XXX Scion tC's doesn't exactly constitute as a "mass problem".. but the fact that its happening strikes some people as odd. Myself, I had to pay over 2K to get my car fixed.. James from ProMotion Tuning/Creative Compacts is having the same issue.. only Toyota completely withdrew his offer they gave him. I wont go into details about his situation.. its not my place.
"Chrisholmes" started a thread "I killed my engine" with a description of a knocking sound. I almost knew immediately that I should check it out and see what was up. Sure enough.. he just recently posted that Toyota had found his rod bearings spun, crank damaged, and ended up having to replace his entire short block assy. Luckily for him, again, he didn't have to pay.
I am in the process now of putting together a case against Toyota and Scion for their terrible customer service and their recent issues they are having with these rod bearings spinning and cranks being damaged. I talk to several guys here at work and others all over in regards to this.. all of them agree that they believe its something at the factory level. Who ever mfgrs the bearings, etc. must not be making these things correctly. I am basically going to bring to their attention that these recent failures are not a result of operator error or their favorite excuse "over-revving".. its something they need to look into more, and they should be reimbursing myself, James and whoever else they shaft before they decide to make a decision... I am not going to make any harsh or sudden moves.. but If I get 5 vehicles with similar problems.. I am going in for the kill.
PLEASE IF YOU HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH YOUR TC, ESPECIALLY ROD BEARINGS, CRANK, ENGINE PERIOD.. PUT AS MUCH INFORMATION AS YOU CAN ON HERE!
Please provide the dealership's # and name, your name and contact info (PM to me)
Thanks

Incase you can't read it...sorry for the crummy pic, dig camera is sorta weak....
"Customer states engine is ticking loudly. Technician checked over the vehicle and found the noise to be from the lower end. Removed the oil pan and found METAL FLAKES in the oil pan. Called California and opened a case and California advised to call the local region rep. Was told to tear down the engine and to find the cause as per Danny Ngo. Disassembled the engine and found the #4 Rod Bearing to be spun and scoring the crankshaft. replacement of the crank, rod and main bearings, oil pump, thurst washers would be neccessary. Rebuilt engine as per Toyot Rep. Danny Ngo."
R.O Date : 12/02/04 (Car was delivered to dealership on 8/21/04)
BTW, before I get flamed for "low oil or no oil" i checked my oil 2 days before this happened and my oil level was fine.

Just to show my RO Date and When I got my car
Oh yeah by the way.....everything was under warranty...i did not have a single aftermarket product on my car.
Thanks Zach
I sure hope so.. My gut feeling, which usually isn't wrong, tells me there is more than meets the eye. Hopefully if I can provide enough evidence of repeated failure, they can take into concideration the possibility that their mfgr of bearings, etc. could have messed up.. or even better.. they messed up.
My ideal end result would be Toyota recognizes their deficiency and fixes it, reimburse myself, James from ProMotion, Zach?.. anyone!

Wow 4 cars with an identical problem! Starting to look like Toyota owes Stu an apology and some money! How many more will there be?
Mine taps but it's just your common valve tapping from the VVT-i and only presents itself in the upper RPM band but I'll definitely notice if it changes since I never listen to the radio.

Its actually 5 cars now.
If everyone can get me the VIN# off of their vehicle.. I am going to compile them and see if they are all from the same factory. Also get me your mileage when the incident happend.. thanks!
I wont tell you what to do, but you should remove your aftermarket items, ie. K&N intake, and dont put on your header.. get that thing checked out and hope that it isn't anything bad.. I dunno though..
My tapping was when under a load.. not when idling.. sounds like its probally not what we are experiencing
**PLEASE.. DONT EVERYONE FREAK OUT.. YOU WILL HEAR SOME TAPPING, TICKS, BANGS.. ETC.**
I am just diagnosing peoples issues that have acutally been and had their vehicle inspected by Toyota.

I do have the DC strut bar installed, but it is not from that because I have an aftermarket intake installed.

Ok.. that is 5 recorded cars.. All similar crank/bearing issues... all different levels of mods... some stock... sounds to me like I have a good case forming here.
I tell you the killer though.. the one post from Noel saying he had cylinder wall scoring..
What do you know... so did I.. he said they claimed it was from the crank... well..
Maybe that is where mine came from
Its on like donkey kong my fellow Scioners!
