I don't notice a rattle. Is this only on some tC's or is this somthing that's supposidly affects the model as a whole.

As a side note, I do think my engine sounds funny... like a diesel, but quiter.

I think it only affects a small number of our cars. Thank goodness for that too.

Below is from the guys who isolated the rattle to a weld defect:

To make the hatch tick as Wolo's does, just put one hand underneath the hatch about 4 inches towards the rear from where the strut connects, and put the other hand on the passenger's side bottom edge corner of the hatch. Apply a light force. You will hear a distinct ticking sound coming from the hatch right about where the electrical connection for the defroster is mounted to the rear glass. His car does it, neither of mine do.

Wo, we should have shot some pics and posted them.

If it is the weld, not sure how hard it would be for the dealer to correct......

I still have to stress that the weld problem is an educated guess at this point. I don't want people running out screaming "The tC's got defective welds!!!"

I'm trying to schedule a meeting with the local service manager at my dealership. He's already been appraised of the situation by my rep, and we're getting ready to start the process of Scion doing a similar diligent "sound check."

It may take time, but I'm confident we'll figure something out.

Wolo, thanks for all the time and energy on this one. I think many of us are waiting to hear THE answer before taking to dealer. Many of us have gone before and the dealer has not been able to fix.

Also if you could post a PIC of exact location of the supposedly bad weld, it would be appreciated. I also tried to reproduce by didn't know exactly where to place the hands/pressure.

Good luck with the dealer and hopefully a solution will come about.

Mine started rattling....and my door panel too. and parts of my dash. I think it has something to do w/ my 2kw's to 2 12's ;)

But seriously...nice write up. If I ever notice a rattle in mine that isn't the result of extreme bass, I'll definitely have to check that out.

Bass will rattle a car to death. If you can ever keep it from NOT rattling, you should post what you did to keep it from coming apart from the bass.

Well, the sun finally came out today and the weather got warmer. After sitting in the work parking lot for the morning the rattle came back but very faintly, I had to listen for it to hear it. So I do think it's temperature related. But, it went away completely even after sitting in my driveway for awhile and the interior was hot. No rattles on the way back otherwise I would have headed straight for the dealer. I think the magic number might be when the temp is above 70 degrees F.

Oh well, hopefully it's gone for good.

Thats funny, mine seems to rattle more in the morning when its cooler. Here in KY its about 30-40 in the morning and thats when I hear it the most.

today was a REALLY strange rattle day. Morning 44degrees and it rattled non-stop on the way to work. Lunch break it warmed up with the sun shining and the hatch rattle was not as bad but my sunroof started rattling and creaking. At this time, I had had enough an said I was going to take it to the dealer tomorrow instead of waiting for the TSB to be released.....then on the way home I barely heard a noise.

This is driving me crazy, just when I am fed up and had enough it gets better. Its almost like the car knows when its going to the shop and straightens up. I think my car is ALIVE....I am going to start calling him JOHNNY 5 (Boy, I had to go back about 20 years for that reference, and a sad one at that.)

Lets just hope they issue the TSB for it soon. I have done the live chat and emailed Scion and both times they said they are working on the problem and will be puting out a TSB. Both times it sound like it will happen soon.

I personally can't wait because I have been waiting for the hatch TSB before I take my car in to hopefully fix my sunroof with the other TSB. It much easier for me to get them done together since getting to the dealership is a pain with my work schedule

As soon as one of us gets a confirmed TSB for the hatch, please post! Other than a few minor things, my tC has been GREAT!!!! And nobody can beat this price.

I don't think that will be a problem, I bet there will message after message about the TSB when it comes out.

I agree, the TC is an outstanding car and at least Scion is working on the rattle thing and hopefully everything will work out. I guess thats the price we pay for buying a 1st year production car from a new company (I know its a Toyota, but still....), but just look at the car AND THE PRICE...could anyone blame us.

My TC has always rattled and it bugs the hell out of me. I think next week I'm finally going to take it in and have the rattle and the tranny (grinding) looked at.....

Did anyone that posted on this thread from a year ago, ever find any resolution, or something that wasn't a complete fix but made the rattle a little more bearable?

ok..i took my car to the dealer the other day to see if they could fix the rattle problem. the one specific rattle that was annoying me the most was coming from the back rear passenger side area. sounded like plastic hitting metal or something. anyways. they insulated the rear interior trim and it significantly reduced the rattles in the back. i wouldn't say 100% eliminated...but it's not nearly as bad as before. so if u haven't tried taking it to the dealer yet..give it a shot and see if they can do anything.

Been there, done that....... I droped it off at 7am went back at 5pm, waited another 2 hours, then got my car back so dirt y it took me two hours to clean, and the rattle is worse than before.... Now I'm afraid to take it back to the same dealership.... I'm honestly just going to deal with it till I can afford to replace the roof with a fiberglass or cf one.... other that that annoying rattle I'm still 90% in love with my car
