ya they have a new system in nj cop cars that look up plate just by driving by them the computer scans id's and alerts the officer on how it was handled most of that was by the book it sucks but in the long run if the cop runs into him down the road he might be nicer

No the police can do this. And no I am not a cop but do have a bachelors degree in Criminal Justice. The police can run a plate and do have the authority to arrest especially since he had a warrant out. I generaaly dislike the police and side with citizens. But in this case your friend was wrong.

how was my friend wrong??? he didnt do anything wrong at all. he paid for the ticket when he got it (months ago). he didnt argue or resist arrest from the officer.

whats WRONG is the fact that there was even a warrant out for him at all because he supposedly didnt pay a ticket. even though he did.

you sure about that degree?

im not saying that cop did his job wrong, its not the cops fault that the ticket wasnt marked as paid for. im talking about the system itself and where my friend was arrested.

Well...then the cop nor your friend were in the wrong it got "lost" in the records department. But once a warrant is issued a cop has no choice but to arrest. They let him go, he has no legal course of action and he was there for 2 hours and? No harm no foul. And BTW I did not read I skimmed the story was VERY drawn out but it was a girl who summited the story so....go figure.

I love seeing you tC owners always bickering, arguing and insulting each other for such small things. Keep the entertainment alive kids.

Anyways, what the cop did wasn't "illegal". He did his job by arresting him since he had a warrant out. Even though it was the "systems" fault by accidentally misplacing, losing, etc the paper work stating he did pay for his ticket, those things happen. I'm sure your friend isn't the first nor will he be the last. The cop could have dealt with it a lot better and could have just escorted your friend outside and then arrest him there, so it wouldn't cause such a scene in front of the customers and friends. But, that's all up to the officer's discretion if he wants to do that or not.

the officer did nothing illegal however with this happening at his work then turning out to be nothing he may have a defamation of character civil suit against the PD especially if any there was any kind of malice taken place. You also have to look at the fact if you ____ one officer off you will ____ them all off and he better fly straight or they will own him.
