k and n intake, or AEM????
I was reading on the k&n website that their COA on an xb puts out 8 horsies, while the aem's only like 6. I'm ordering my scion and I was wondering if any body had any advice on whether to just get the aem and let the dealer install, or get the kand n with the extra dos. Also, any body know about sound....etc???
I would suggest the K&N Typhoon over the AEM. It sounds great, and the gains are better than any other intake. You can get them for $168 if you look around.
However, the AEM is looked upon very well at dealerships, so if you're concerned about getting hassled when taking your car in for service, the AEM would be a better choice.
Either way, don't pay for someone to install the intake for you. It's not difficult at all.

I have a TRD (Toyota Racing Development) High Performance (drop-in) Air Filter, that is Pre-Oiled, washable and reusable and very similar to the K&N I had in my old Subaru. I do notice a slight improvement in HP and MPG. http://www.toyotapartsworld.com/toyperform.htm
Does anyone know what the performance gains are supposed to be?
Any one else have a TRD?

i just bought the K&N and i love it.
The polished finish wasn't my first choice, but it has now become an AWESOME! 2nd.
what i would add aside from the difference in power (it is noticeable, but not tremendous) is that if you want to be functional, get the K&N, if you want to keep your engine bay looking full to show it off, get the AEM. The AEM fills in the gap let by the Factory air box, whereas the K&N does not. so,if you want go, get K&N, if you want show, get the AEM.
As far as the gains are concerned, i am no longer worried about big ___ SUV's breathing down the back of box, and passing has become a little easier.
Sound? I like the kiss, the Intake gives to the air as it first takes it in, but other than that, you get a little lower sounding idle and decent little growl  when accelerating hard.
Like most other people have said before, your gains come after you get the box up over 3K RPM's.

I've used K&N on my box and i got quite a large difference in the tq gain @ low RPMs mostly, K&N's filter get dirty faster but...they keep the engine cleaner that way.
also...
You spray the oil directly on to the filter after you wash it and such. The oil is what keeps the cotton guaze(sp?) from drying up.
