Default Overhead handle rattle

Anyone else getting rattling noise with the [driver side] overhead handle (the handle above the doors next to your head)? Anyone know how to take it apart?

Have you tried taking it to the dealer yet? Why bother taking it apart yourself? It's under warranty, right? That's what the dealer is for.

The problem with taking the car to the dealer for minor stuff like this is that it can often be far MORE inconvenient than just doing it yourself. I've reached that point even with oil changes -- it takes me 20 minutes, tops, to do my own oil change. Going to the dealer takes a good hour and a half once you figure in time spent driving there, waiting, and driving back. For the ten bucks the dealer oil change saves me (until I run out of my three free ones), it's not worth it to me. My time is worth more than ten bucks an hour.

This is nothing like an oil change. Everyone does oil changes, if you want to do them yourself, feel free. Or if you want to take it to another shop or wherever, no big deal.

But if there is actually SOMETHING WRONG, it should be a warranty issue. Let the dealer look at it and diagnose the problem and come up with a solution that they will support. Maybe it reaches farther than a couple people here and there. Only way to know is to take it in.

I agree with markbvt. Why should I take a number of hours out of my day to take my car to the dealership if I can attempt to fix the problem myself with a screwdriver and 30 minutes?

I'm dropping off my car tonight to hopefully fix a hatch rattle this weekend, but the overhead handle rattle is inconsistent. I'm not sure if the dealer will even bother to look at it.

If they don't fix it, I'll fix it myself.

That's a bit too drastic...

If worse comes to worse, I'll just take off the damn driver's side handle (why would you even need one) and fill up the holes with some sort of butt-plug, like the plugs on the ceiling near the rear dome light... if it'll fit.

^^^ he said "butt-plug"

Seriously, probably just a little plastic-on-plastic rubbing. Little bit of WD-40 or white-lithium oughta do the trick.

If the engine starts making funky noises or the sunroof won't open, then yeah, the car goes to the dealer. But if the overhead grab handle rattles a little (and mine has done so in the past, although it seems to have stopped -- my hatch rattles now instead), I'm not going to bother taking the time to visit the dealer for that. Or even the hatch rattle, although I might have them look at that when they've already got the car anyway for the apparent upcoming wind deflector upgrade.
