Plastic part of key broke
Is this common for your key to break apart? The plastic part that keeps the small censor piece for the alarm came apart.
It's my stepdaughter's key and she told me when she was leaving for work, she put the key in the ignition, it just broke. WTF?! I don't know whether to believe her or not but I think that the keys should've been manufactured just a bit stronger and more durable. When I bought my 06 Scion, the dealer told me not to lose the keys. Worth about $200 he told me. Seems its not worth $2. Anyways, Scion/Toyota will replace the key, right?
I don't think it's very common for it to break.
The dealership will be able to replace the key yes, but I don't know how much it will cost.
Are you sure there is a censor in there? I didn't think there was. If there isn't, I am sure you can get another one made for cheaper. How about a spare??? The dealer does give you one of those when you buy the car.

Im not sure if it a censor or not. It's a chip for the alarm I guess. Anyways, we have a spare but we need to relpace this one. Hopefully, they won't charge us

Anything over $100 from the dealer is crap.

that is a place where you can order a brand new key. the only problem is you still need the dealership to reprogram it.
as for your extended warranty, it has to be failure that isn't related to wear and tear. because otherwise it would be like "my brake pads wore out, replace them under warranty"
you can try and see if it is, but i wouldn't count on it.

ive broken 3 keys for the lexus. My mom actually snapped one in the ignition and started to cry. lol. What ive learned is that when youre turning the car on, hold the key with your fingers as close to the hole as you can. It gives the key less leverage to twist.
And yes, it should be covered under warranty. All of mine were.

i don't think the keys are poor quality at all..
i still have the 1-st gen keys with the soft rubbery plastic buttons... that despite it looking dimpled and worn.. have lasted a long time..
i don't think it's uncommon for a key to break like that... unless there's another story.. dropping the keys... excessive abuse (which i can't think of how..)
