scion jc... You will get used to the footing of ABS. It will just come in time. I will not tell you to slam the brakes, there may be a time when you need to, also don't do it too light. It is just like driving anything, you will be able to judge for yourself soon. When something is wrong with them you will know. Something like what I was describing or some of the other people hear were describing will happen. ABS sounds like a perfect concept but there are horror stories about how they malfunction. I would not swear on them or disc brakes. Things can go bad either way.

Also, I just want to make it clear I never hit anyone that quote 2 posts up was not from me but from someone else. I see that it is written above the quote who actually said it. A tree was the only thing struck in my accident.[/quote]

Man I feel for you . I hope everything is going well. I would like to know how the Knee airbags worked. Was it a good thing to have in the car. I just seem a little skeptikle with new things like that..
I hope u and ur girl get better. No problems with my TC. and brakes. I did Have a 2001 Toy Highlander with ABS and they worked awsome. I had to use them on the freeway the first week I Purcharsed the car. Other cars stoped suddenly I had no choice but to slam on the brakes wich kicked in the abs, it sounded like a plane landing. Least to say I did not hit the persons in front of me, but the cars behind me hit me causeing a chain reaction on the 14 highway.

Well always try to be careful when you drive of course. I would have loved for none of this to happen but what it did show me is that this car is safe. All the airbags deployed including the knee airbag. I have a little bruising on my left knee but if that airbag was not there I could have easily broken my legs or had them stuck in my car. So I say trust them they are a great thing to have. I did not have side curtain airbags but for me it would not have mattered. All the trauma I took was from the seat belt and a little from the sterring wheel which screwed up the left part of my hip.

Do all new cars or just certain ones come with the little black box data recorder that is often used to see what the car was doing just before an accident? I wonder if the tC has it.

This all sounds like a problem with the wheel speed sensors of the ABS. This is a problem that happens occasionally with new cars and while travelling at low speeds. The wheel speed sensors are magnetic and collect a lot of debris from the road. Also, if the rotors are freshly turned, it can leave metal fillings on the sensors. If you are having this problem go to a mechanic to check out the brakes and be sure to ge them to clean the sensors and tone rings.

The speed limit on the road was 45. I was going 40 because of a previous similar problem that I had that day. I was taking it easy. I am trying to get pictures. I would want to see how they react to crashes so I am trying to get the pictures up. I will have them for you all.

Hey, just to clarify, with ABS, youre SUPPOSED to steer the car left and right to help slow the car down... but usually ABS can lock up when you do that... so thats why some people say to steer straight when you SLAM on it... Also, this might be demented, but can you post the pics of your smooshed tC... I wanna see how well it did in the crash... Im all about safety

Well click on Car Crash and have fun.

I am posting these pics, or their link anyway, on a new thread so that they may reach the people who have gotten bored with this thread. A chance for all to see.

Your accident sounds sort of similar to what I just did with my 03 Eclipse GTS just over 2 weeks ago. (which is why I've been looking at a Scion tC.. but no GAP for me )

I got paged into work on july 17th and I was coming from a friends (this was around 7:30 in the morning or so). I had pretty much just merged onto the highway (far right lane) and was accelerating with a car in front of me. The car in front of me changes lanes suddenly and I see something in the road (turns out to be a full trash bag, didn't know what it was until I tried to avoid it). I swerved to take the shoulder of the road to avoid it and hit the brakes and try to get back on the road and my back end just keeps on going and turns me around causing me to go sideways (facing the opposite way of course) across 3 or 4 lanes and slamming my passenger side into the concrete median (hit front passenger side first which cause the back end to hit and flip me back around). I had front and side airbags. I had slight burns on my face and arm and a big bruise from the seatbelt. I pretty much avoided any damage to my passenger door though. Both wheels on that side popped off though. I don't know what "caused" it either. Rocks, brakes, or whatever. I know I wasn't speeding or driving drunk. (Cop that arrived at the scene accused me of it because I had bloodshot eyes, but I had been swimming in my contacts earlier and slept in them blah).

Glad you guys had as good of luck as me (as far as having accidents go). That brake thing scares me though. I don't need another accident, but I think my car other car was "cursed" anyways.

Keep us posted about what Scion says about the brake problem. If it is a defect with a great deal of the tCs I hope they will issue a TSB. I myself haven't had that problem with the brakes, then again I haven't had to use the ABS system for an emergency stop yet (knock on wood), but if they issue a TSB I'm sure as hell going straight to my dealer and telling them to fix that ____.

I certainly will keep everyone posted. Allstate is taking their time getting back to me about what they say happened. I am hoping for the best. As far as contacting Scion, I did that and just gave them a claim about what happened and they said they don't know this to be a major problem yet but they apologized for my accident and the guy on the phone said it sounded like the ABS locked up when I was telling him the story. Waiting for Allstate and I will go from there. I just want another car.. Thats all.

Damn, sorry to hear about the accident. Well I havent had any brake problems. but the third gear in my tranny went out after having the car 6 days. I just got it back this last tuesday after being in the shop for 2 weeks. Now reverse is not working very well. They ordered me a new tranny and I have to take the car in tomorrow. This sucks. This was my very first new car and I am busting my ___ to earn it. there shoundnt be anything wrong with it in the first place. But I know how you feel. Again sorry to hear about the accident, but most important is that you and your girl are alright. It's better to be confided to your house than a caskit. Everything will work out

The ABS in the rear locked up but I was going slow enough and it was no real problem. The car righted itself soon after and all was fine. I dismissed the occurence as something I may have done wrong. At 10 PM later that night I was driving down a road going West. I was moving at 40 MPH and an animal came out of the woods. I swerved into the empty lane next to me and that is when the same thing happened again. This time there horrible results. The back of the car started bouncing, the tires were screetching and the back of the car spun me competely around. I hit a tree and totalled the tC and that is what brought me to a stop. My brakes did not work in the front. Watch out for this problem. My 2 week old tC is totalled. I am banged all up and am waiting for my insurance agent to tell me if this is a defect of the tC's. If you have had a similar problem be careful and also post so I know if this is a defect with my car or all cars. As angry as I am that my car spun me out of control, it saved my girlfriends life and mine. I am confined to my home for 2 weeks. Watch out.
Man, glad youre alright, so do you think youd get another one?

Umm... that is not the damage from a 40mph crash. Sorry. How fast were you REALLY going?

I had an old lady pull directly out in front of me in highway traffic. I ran into the back left of her at 65 mph. My airbags deployed and my truck (S10 Xtreme) was damaged significantly, but not enough to total it... 5,000 in repairs. It was her fault though (cop saw her pull out in front of me) so I was fine insurance wise.

Also, you said you swerved and lost it with the back end swinging around... It looks like a front driver side impact to me (shattered rim). Now, I can pretty much assume that it was either A) Very Very wet, or B) You were going much faster than 40mph in order for you to do a full revolution skidding only to hit a tree on the side of the road with a front left impact...

That aside, I'm glad you are ok. Accidents are not fun and a definately not pretty.
(FYI, I do sort of know what I'm talking about as I'm an insurance adjuster. :-))

After having the brakes do the lock-out thing for me a third time yesterday, I gave ScionHQ a call.

All three times it's done this so far, have been with slight to moderate pressure applied to the pedal, going around 30mph.

Conditions on all three times were bone dry (We've not been getting much rain here in WI), and on level roads.

ScionHQ put me in touch with Andrew Scion in Milwaukee, and my car is currently there for diagnosis.

The Lead Tech was telling me they have heard a few things about the ABS issue, so more than likely, it's something known now, but they are trying to deduct what is causing it. I know I can't reproduce the problem on demand, so they're going to try and break it loose, so to speak this afternoon.

I hope they can find at least something going on here, or at the very least get some code back saying what happened..
