Anyone who thinks the tC has cheap interior, or that the tC is a cheap "butt" car, or would trade it just makes me think that your prolly 16 and this is your first expierence with owning a car. rattles and creeks can be fixed. I do know what your going through, I'm a dealer who also owns an '05 tC like the rep you met. I too had the squeeks and creeks...I fixed them, done. I'd much rather deal with those simple ___ problems than the ones I've had with the other 7 cars I've owned.

my tc has been to the dealers 4 times for rattles and nothing has been fixed yet

I got both the infamous sunroof and hatch rattles. for the sunroof there are four mounting bolts, the TSB that Toyota put out suggest adding locking washers to the front two, I did all four. For the hatch you need to aquire a copy of the TSB froma dealer to see if your tC was made after a certain date, idendifiable by the VIN, if it was made before this date then you need to have the two struts replaced, your dealer will pay for this. If your tC was made afterwards, like mine, and still has the rattle, under the plastic guard where the lid of the hatch rests, there are two large bolts, make some kind of ruber stopper to cover the heads, aslo try tightening the struts...as far as the glove box, never heard of that, try tightening whatever bolts/screws you can find, or adding plastic washers/spacers in-between the heads.

 

Again, count your blessings, you don't drive a late model VW!

I hate to tell you this, but we already had our struts replaced to solve a rattle issue and guess what: even after waiting 3 weeks cause ours were on backorder too, the rattle is still there, that does NOT solve the problem, sorry guys!
And as much as I hate to say this, most news cars have some rattle issues, period! They just dont make any perfect cars.

Ohhhh dont tell me that. I am hoping the change of struts will solve all my problems and I will actually like getting into my car again. Ive already waited 3 weeks for the parts to come in, and I have to wait another 3. But I think this may actually work for me, because the sound seems like its coming from the exact spot where the struts are. So Ill keep my fingers crossed.

Oh and I totally disagree with the most new cars have rattles statement. Absolutely not true. I base that on personal experience.

 

Some of you are taking this rattle thing a little too far. Honestly, lemon laws and selling the car over a rattle. Do you know how difficult it is to build a car to anticipate every rattle? Even foam strips on every panel would be a poor start. Ever carry a normal household object (printer, TV, box of paper clips) in your car and notice how much they rattle? try and design a 1.5 ton complex machine that goes through intense vibrations and movements every day and make it not have any rattles.

Now, I have the hatch rattle, and it is annoying. But I have found that other people only notice it once I point it out to them. I drive hundreds of cars every day (I work as a Valet) if you listen for rattles you will find them. Almost all cars have rattles. Your BMWs and Mercedes have a plenty too. Some of the new high end Lexuses (Lexii?) are amazingly quiet and rattle free. They have such plush suspensions you dont even notice speed bumps. If you want to hear rattles ride in a older (2+ yr) mustang, corvette, or Benz for that matter. If you listen for rattles you will find them.

Even after all day driving other cars I look forward to the drive home in my tC. I just dont listen for it, I know its their and I plan on getting the strut swap done eventually. But in the mean time I enjoy my car for how great it is, a $16k econo car that feels, drives, and many believe is a $30k luxury sports car. The problem is not with the car, it is with you. You need to learn to not be so worried about every little problem. You will live a much happier life. Do what you can to fix the rattle and save the lemon laws and the recalls for cars that have real problems, like not running.

 

haha, you do have a point. Some people go looking for trouble and find it. But that is not a fair statement to apply to this car. The rattle is freaken loud. And no, not that many new cars have rattles fyi. You make it out to sound like people should expect it. If everyone had your attitude, manufacterers would not feel the pressure to build better cars. Between family and friends and myself, this is the FIRST car that has rattles like this being so new.

 

Where is the info on the VIN cutoff for the struts? Also is there any link to the TSBs so that I can talk to my local Toyota dealer and not have to drive this 40 miles one way to get to the Scion dealership to have this fixed?

I have also heard the TSB does not ALWAYS fix the hatch rattle. But it is worth a FREE try to get it fixed. I am sure it fixes some tCs or else Scion would not have spent the time/effort to issue a TSB.......

I bought my car in August 2004, my hatch doesnt rattle
at all. That sucks thought how that's doing that in a few of your tC's. With every new car, you will run into problems POST Production and when it's auctally out on the road.

 

OK, can someone else try this? I have an appointment with the Regional Toyota rep who only visits once a month, and need more info from you guys...
It's not the right strut, but the window area right above it that is generating the noise for me. Simply snap off the strut and try the steps below if you want..
Open the rear hatch and grab it with both hands and gently rock it back and forth. You should hear it creak. Now try it with a friend and one of you pinch the area in the picture below, where the metal sandwiches the rear glass.


When I pinch the glass and have the rear hatch rocked back and forth, the sounds goes away!
This may have something to do with an intallation clip being left in, or the window epoxy not being applied correctly, or something...

I can expect a few little rattles but my hatch sounds like its open and the whole back end it loose and about to fall off

 

So will anyone else try this? I feel it will be benificial to at least the next year tC build when I talk with the Toyota Regional rep next week.

 

I also had my Hatch STruts replaced, and the rattle is still there!

I listen to music a lot, but sometimes I just want peace and quiet, and with all these rattles, thats basically impossible.

The rear hatch and moonroof sound like a percussion symphony at every slight hint of body flex or turbulence.
