well since everyone else is chiming in, so shall I, over all I think that granted it's annoying seeing kids getting expensive things given to them, the bigger thing is hearing them talk about it, and ya it also doesn’t help them appreciate it, having something this nice given to you, doesn’t teach you the value of an object. There is a difference in helping out and them being given out. This is something that should be taken into account when reading something and getting all riled up.
Hopefully this makes since, I’m not that awake right now.

Okay, but among ScionLife members there are a lot more 16 year olds with brand new cars than there are people who work and work and never catch a break.

I was just writing to the audience.

scion are made for young drivers you know. Plus their price is pretty cheap for what you get. Great deals + good cars = good presents. Yeah they are spoiled, but that's how life is. Some people have it good, some people don't. sucks badly that i can't get one for a bday present, but o wellz, i can get one myself

Scion targets young drivers.... they are not MADE for young drivers.

I do agree with the subject.... kids getting a 16k car is ridiculous. I guess they'll have to learn responsibility the hard way.

My first couple cars cost $500..... total.

Huh? No offense, but how the hell did she come up with that logic? When I was in high school, I bought a used Civic- 2 years old & about 25k miles. This was in about 1995- I sold it last month. We got it for under $10k, I put about 150k miles on it in 10 years, and it was just as reliable as any other car. (It NEVER broke down or left me stranded anywhere in those 10 years).
Safety and reliability aren't factors in the new/used debate. They are inherant to the car itself. A used Toyota will almost always be safer and more reliable than a brand new Kia or Daewoo...

My first car was a Toyota Celica that my father drove for 10 years and then my sister for 4 before I ever even had my license. By the time I got it, it was 14 years old with 150k+ miles, and I drove it daily for another 2 years beyond that. Sure, it was "given" to me, but it was worth about $300. When it died, we got the aforementioned Civic. I was all set to get a slightly older car, as I was in highschool and money was tight. My parents wanted me to drive something with airbags, so they made up the difference between what I was planning on spending, and the cost of the cheapest reasonable car with them.
10 years later, I sold it and bought my first real new car - my tC.

And for the record, I do have a problem with people that get brand-new cars for their 16th birthday. Maybe I'm just old-school, but I firmly believe that everyone's first car should be a beater- something inexpenive, likely used, that simply gets the job done. New drivers are going to hit something eventually, so you might as well do it in a cheap car until you have a couple years of driving under your belt.

Where I grew up, very few of us were "given" cars, and even fewer were given new ones. Most of us worked to pay for our cars, or if we were given one, it was either a hand-me-down from a parent or sibling, or a used beater from a newspaper classified.
Starting off on the low end of the spectrum makes you appreciate the finer cars once you get them, which is why it makes me sick to see 16 year olds getting brand new rides without having to do a damn thing for them (especially the ones getting BMWs, Hummers, etc)

I work 40 +hours a week, have done since I started highschool, night, weekends..etc...and I'm still doing full time even through college, bought my tC, a Cutlass Ciera, and my ZX2 all myself, no one helping me...but who gives a ____ ....if people have rich parents...good for them, as long as they don't treat the car like ____. All that matters is respect...and don't try to be whiney and _____y if the little things go wrong. I see it as, if someone gave you a car for free, you can't ever _____ to em about it.

I can safely say that new vs used really has very little to do with the cost of insurance. Its primarily based on the make, model and year of the car, as well as the current book value (of course, that's just looking at the half of the equation pertaining to the insurance company repairing or buying your car - the liability factor is completely separate).
I write computer software for an insurance company... I've picked up a lot over the last 5 years. ;)

what a great thread

there are rich kids everywhere, they'll get theirs in the end or maybe not. those kids should appreciate the fact that they are fortunate enough to be in that type of situation where they have parents that have the means to buy them a car as a present. plus i was flippin through mtv and on that laguna beach show some high school kid was driving a new all blacked out e-class mercedes coupe, now thats spoiled!

if you wanna feel better than those spoiled kids wylietc just beat them in a race and make them feel stupid, i'll even let you borrow my car

My first car was a 2003 bmw 325i, got that when I was 16, but the lease ended and I bought a quad (Suzuki Z400) so I got a dodge dakota...had that for less than a year (only got like 8-9 mpg ). I traded the truck in for my tC and as of right now im working, paying for an apartment, my car, my cell phone, quad...all that stuff and im 19. And don't think kids who get scions as gifts are spoiled...the cars only cost mid teens...its the kids that get m3's or audi s4's, stuff that costs 40-60k. So what, someone has it easier than you do, welcome to the real world, because the person who has it easier hasn't seen anything other than a free ride.

No matter how much money or stuff you have or get from someone else, two things will still always be true:

1. Money and things won't buy you respect
2. Your sh*t still smells

We should all just listen to Bob Marley and relax.

I don't understand all the fuss? I'm 17, got my tC when I was 16. The first tC from the dealership cause my dad works in the parts dept. Why is it such a bad this for a new driver to get a Scion? I would've been happy to get any car but my parents decided to buy me a Scion tC! I'm happy with it. Some people make fun of my scion. They say it's cheap japanese ____. I just slap em over the head. While they might have gotten a new escalade from their parents, I'm happy with a car that cost far less. It's not a big deal for a new driver to get new cars these days. Many people at my school have new cars( and lemme tell you our school is no rich area)

Scion WAS targeted towards the youth. So why can't we enjoy that? I know I enjoy it...

Grasshopper, you have taken the pebble....time for you to go. Congratulations to those who have earned their Scion. Congratulations to those who have been given one and who will cherish and respect the gift. Either can teach respect or become a meaningless indulgence. Make of it what you will.

I wrote a check for my tC, but then...I am much closer to 60 then to 16. I just never really outgrew fun cars. I started with a used 1960 Corvair ($450 in 1966) and eventually was able to own a 1985 MR2, a 1988 Celica (lowered, fitted with super rubber and wheels, and relieved of that useless rear seat), and now...the tC. I am grateful for all of them.

Similar to my store, only i drive a '95 F-150. :? I hope to never fear parallel parking ever again with my scion.

Answer: Spoiled

I have a wife, no kids yet, but when I do there is no way in HELL I am giving them 17k for a car.
