Stealership
So yesterday i was at work and i get ready to leave just to find out that my keys are missing. I look around they are nowhere to be found. I started to think about it and realized i have viper 5901 with what? a two way pager....i set my alarm off a few times and dont find them...so i havea keyring with nothing but my skyon key on it and a viper 5901 transponder...but it gets worse, i work at a car audio installation shop so i have been in and out of vehicles the entire day....
Anyways i went to the dealership and asked them about a key since i have no spare, they told me 230 for the key and get this 295 for labor on programming the key...nearly fainted and told the that i worked at the audio shop(conviently we do some work for them from time to time) so they dropped it down to 180 for the key and 215 for programming... my hear as well as my bank account are now empty...and the transponder for my alarm retails at 300...hate to see what i have to pay for that when i get some money

They cost that much for multiple reasons.
First is the transponder. There is a chip in your key that is programmed to communicate with ONLY your car. Without that chip, a thief would not be able to even start your car (like if someone was able to duplicate your key on to a normal one). It's an antitheft measure.
Secondly, keyless entry. There are guts to the keyless entry on the key itself that are not cheap. The programming of that part can actually be done yourself if you want to tell them that and save some money. The programming instructions are on this forum in multiple places - but keep in mind - that is ONLY for the keyless entry part. The transponder is the biggie. Without the old key and the chip inside it, they have to get you a completely new one.
It's not a "stealership" problem (I hate when people use that word)... it's a technology problem. The stuff isn't cheap.

The only way to know is to ask them what it actually entails. If it is only 2 hours of a labor charge - then ya, ridiculous. But if they're adding something else in with that - it might be OK.
