I am at the dealer today for the same problem with my xB. It is because the 1st gear and Reverse gear do not have synchros. I was told by toyota that putting the car in first while rolling is bad news bears, just a characteristic of the tranny, it is not a bad design, because allowing the car to easily go into first while rolling will do much more damage(thanks tranny classes). The thing with reverse, you should be able to put the car in a different gear real quick to align the synchros and then try again to put the car in reverse. that should work, hope this helps.

I've got 22k on my tC and its already starting to slip at about 4K rpms.

I think the reason why I prematurely wore out my clutch was because of heavy rims.

I've switched to lightweight rims and lucked out w/ a new OEM clutch on eBay. The guy had installed the TRD clutch at the dealer and had no need for the OEM clutch. I won the bid at $36 + $15 shipping. One of those rare lucky moments, I guess.

it's like that sometimes... try shifting into 1st and then back into reverse... that or let go of the clutch and push it back in... should work.

just always double clutch it (press in twice). Alot of people have the same problem. It's almost automatic for me now....anytime a gear doesn't want to go in, I just double clutch it.

heh heh, what i meant was u can throw a manual tranny into reverse at any speed [100 mph if u want ] BUT u can't [well, u can if u want] release the clutch otherwise, as u say, you will b in the shop with the rest of the burned tranny people.
You are insane if you think you can do that. You can't even get it in gear without grinding if your not at a dead stop.

I used to have the squeaky clutch pedal assembly. Took it in MANY times and all they could figure out to do was lube the assembly. At least 3-4 times this didn't work.

Then one time i went in again, they gave me the car back and NO SQUEAK! I asked them what they did, and they said they just "lubed the hell out of the whole assembly"...

I've STILL had no squeaks to this day (6 months later). so of course, i'm thinking they probably did more than just lube something, cuz theres NO WAY it would have lasted this long. And i've had NO squeaks. NOt even in rainy weather, which is when it used to happen the most.

Makes me think theres some things about the tc that SCION hasn't been totally upfront about.

Ps. I have a early production model. Received in OCt '04

That's basically been my understandnig , and I didn't have tranny classes. Grinding into 1st and R while in motion is consequence of the design. It's supposed to deter you from being able to drop into 1st and R at higher speeds. I'm no mechanic, but thats my understanding

I've done the grinding into R when rolling back. I just grit my teeth and hope for the best when I have to do it. Best thing to do it uh ... use the break to stop, shift, and roll on. That almost sounds too easy, but I'm guilty too.

to go back on topic, I haven't had any trouble with my clutch or tranny yet, but I'm only at 8k. I practically had to relearn on the tC when I drove it off the lot, and the loose clutch really made it harder, but its all good now. I slap myself if I catch myself slipping and either pull some Lazy shifting off or rie the clutch.

It grinds b/c there's no synchros on 1st and reverse, not to prevent you from dropping in at high speeds

Yea, not worth taking it to the dealer over...they will tell you there is nothing wrong...they happen to be right, just the way the car was made - just release the clutch and try again, should be smooth
