tC for Evo?
^^^^^Agreed, I would NEVER buy a used EVO or STi. Most of the time people beat the crap out of them, and then have to sell them because they can't afford the payments.
I would think your best bet would be to find one private-party, because you might be able to find out more about the history of the car. I'm sure there are a few enthusiast-owned EVOs out there that ARE well taken care of.

Personally I wouldnt buy a used Evo. Look at the demographics of those that drive them. The people that want them are young and want to race. The ones who want to race AND can afford it are USUALLY spoiled kids who get it for free.
USUALLY someone who gets a free 35,000 car doesnt care about taking care of something. So my guess is a used EVO is going to be a beater.
This is all generalizations but its usually true.
Just my thoughts

I don't think you would be wise to trade the tC away for a used evo simply because you think your engine might blow...........
Although.....I don't think that's why you are considering this at all. I think you may be trying to justify getting out of your tC and into a faster car..........
But, then again.....fast is good!
But then again....used, sometimes, is not so good!

Kid I knew had an WRX STi...he modded it up and beat the hell out of it because he was getting rid of it after 3 yrs (when he was done w/ college)...
Needless to say Mommy & Daddy bought it for him.
I wouldn't buy a used Evo or WRX STi...they get beat to death.

are we forgeting the allwheel drive? i love my tC and would never compare the reliability of a Toyota product to a mitsu ( i had an Eclipse before my tC) but i did drive a Evo VIII and i can say that it is an incredible machine, its tha first car ive driven that made me say wow within 30 seconds of driving it, i also drove a tc with a super charger and wasnt that impressed because of the crazy amount of wheel spin, its so much torque that you have to baby it to get it to launch properly where in the evo you can just gun it and iy grips right away and off you go. its a totally different type of vehicle so its not a fair comparisson. (Fun driving goes hands down to the evo but the reliability no questions goes to the tC) i also agree that buying a used evo is risky, most do get the crap beat out of them. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Maybe you should just get a used WRX. Not as quick as the EVO of course but still quick and fun. I'm going to be getting an '03, bone stock, and after I trade my tC it will only cost me about $3k extra.
Don't do it, that's a bum trade.
If you're even SLIGHTLY worried about reliability, going from a Toyota to a Mitsubishi engine is NOT the way to go.
Mitsubishi makes high maintainance engines. Argue with me all you want, but I promise you will have problems with a Mitsubishi.
Also, their retail value drops dramatically after you drive one off the lot. Think about it. If you can trade in your new tC, which has already devalued, for a used Evo... Something's wrong with the Evo.
They're nice cars. I looked at them too. But they aren't worth the headaches.

How many miles on your tC?
How much are they buying your tC for?
I was thinking about a WRX, too.

I found one for $19k. An '03. Kind of overpriced but here in WA they seem to be in high demand, and even kbb is over $20k.
I was offered $15.5-$15.9k for my tc. It has almost 10k miles.

mitsu will be out of business, as in absorbed by another entity (mark my words).
evo is a fast crappy car. it starts out slightly more reliable than that dodge piece. imo, if you are gonna go used, get a slightly older S4. it is better engineered and has more options for turbo swaps when needed. the twin turbo 2.7 has a lot of room for a build. clearly, it's a heck of a better engineered machine and will only cost a few grand more.
quick example within 100 miles of bethesda
then again, i'm biased...an S4 is definitely next for me. in a couple years this one will be my dream sleeper. i'm partial to the avant body style.
