weird vibration at idle
i was driving my girl friends car the other day and i was noticing a weird vibration that shook the whole car. it felt like it was coming from the engine bay. the motor revs fine and is running without fault, she told me the car has always vibrated but its been recently that it started getting worse. any ideas?? the car has 109k miles
Lol that's funny but after some looking around I noticed that it only happens when I put the car in gear (it's an automatic) when it's in park the vibration goes away and when it's in drive or reverse the whole car shakes until I get moving.
x2 on checking the motor mounts, esp. the one that goes onto the trans...
have someone (your gf) sit in the car and put it in gear while you look under the hood to see if you can find the cause.. make sure she has the parking brake on and her foot on the brake pedal! lol you dont want her to run you over!! lol and dont do it on a day she's mad at you!

What are the RPMs when the car is in gear compared to when the car is in park. If its too low, the car will vibrate. To check a engine mount, have someone put the car in drive and step on the brake. Then rev the engine up while someone else looks at the motor. If the motor jumps more than usual its a mount problem. Do this in park, drive, and reverse. This is called power braking the car. And make sure when you are revving the car it is a quick rev up to about 4000 rpm, you do not want to hold the gas pedal down, just enough to see the engine move.
This is normal for an Auto. Seems like everyone that has an auto experiences this.
