Safe following distance is at least two full seconds AT ALL SPEEDS -- don't take my word for it, type "two seconds following distance" into Google. Nobody seems to do it, though, so they think they're giving proper room when they're really not. It's like speeding "to keep up with the flow of traffic." People think that's a good excuse, but any traffic court judge will tell you otherwise.
If you're a full two seconds behind, and you're paying attention to the road, there's no way you can rear-end the car in front of you, even if they stop short.
That's why the driver behind is pretty much always legally at fault in a collision like this. Again, don't take my word for it. Here it is, from a LEGAL information site:

i hate it when people tail gate. i'll be going 70mph on the freeway just cruising and some ___ will just be right on my tail. when there's 3 other lanes to go too. so i just usually slow down to the speed limit till they get off my grill. but sorry for what happen to your car. i just have mine for a month still really carefully with it. not being closer than 2 car lengths from a car in front
I know this is getting repetitive but dude.....ouch....that makes me want to cry seeing those pictures....that's my car's stock color.....so it's like looking into a mirror in one of my worst nightmares....I say ____ happens and it could happen to anyone (let me give you an example: You're driving along behind a car *at a safe distance* and you look for a split second in your rearview mirror to change lanes, you look up and the car in front of you has just slammed on their brakes--now you have a few seconds at most to stop...you may get lucky and stop in time and you may not) My point is I value everyones opinion but not when they start name calling....no one was there to witness it but kitty....and I doubt anyone can say that they have never had a close call, especially in a big city like Houston, Dallas, and so on....my two cents
Oh and Kitty come to the Scion Expo anyways....I am pretty sure you'll have lots of fun....

yeah i plan on comin out to the scion expo with or without the car... and actually, i went by the dealership today to look at my car and see what repairs they have done to it so far..... turns out someone at the dealership stole my amp that was in my car... thats some bull____ huh. they left my 12" sub but took my amp.
So sorry to hear that....nothing but bad luck this month huh?? Well don't worry everything will work out, you'll see....by the way is the dealership going to take responsibility for the stolen amp?...also, if you haven't done so yet....take everything out of your car...don't trust anyone...
yeah theyre gona pay for it. i didnt pay but like 100 bucks for that amp cuz my friend owns the shop i got it from and i model for them but its an expensive ___ amp.
ps - rivulent - just cuz specs say that,,,,,doesnt mean that it applies to EVERYsingle tC ever built.
forinstance, my doors are like super weak. they push in a good few cm. when i drive down the highway at speed limit...normal? i think not.

Ok, well you generalized the tC's and said the brakes suck, not that you were having problems with your brakes. Automobiles are built at assembly lines, there is very little variance in parts, unless there is a defective item put in. You should have had them serviced right away, which is your own fault again. Not to mention the ford taurus is an older car - more brake wear = worse brakes. If you're able to see the eyes of the driver in the rearview mirror, you're way too damn close.
if you read what i posted...it said that "i dont know if any of you noticed this while driving, but i did on MY tC" and yes i did say that the tC brakes do suck because there was someone that actually agreed with me and said that their brakes were mushy also. THEREFORE showing that mine isnt the only one with the problem.
and its my fault that my brakes might have been faulty how? oh thats right because i had bought the car brand new and ASSUMED that there would be nothing wrong with it....it being brand new. and read closely, or dont open your mouth, im tired of repeating myself and hearing everyones negative criticism, i saw her eyes in her rear view mirror when we were at the stop sign, not while we were driving.
and for the last time, you werent there, therefore you dont know every detail so for those of you that are critcizing, you have no right to, unless you were there and you saw the accident.

Don't worry -- I know you're way in denial, so most of the stuff I posted is more for the benefit of others who might be in danger of having the same thing happen.
Police will tell you that the people who were directly involved in an accident are usually the WORST people to ask what happened.
And BTW: brakes in a new car are usually "mushy."
