Really good question, and one that I don't know enough about to answer. What I do know, is that your ECU will adapt to minor changes without being tuned, but if you have major engine modifications then your engine will require a tune. What is considered minor and major? That I do not know.

If you get a racing header like a weapon r header, it removes the cat. All racing headers remove the cat

nice piece of information.

What about the High Flow CAT? They're sold individually.. couldn't it be welded in after? I mean how does someone with required emissions testing to be done annually get by this? Not that they do it in Florida.. just sayin..

Also.. lack of backpressure with out one?

If you really wanted to, a high flow cat could in theory be welded in after. I know magnaflow makes a good one and is inexpensive, my buddy got some on his truck. And when you buy headers they say not legal in all 50 states, so if you have emissions testing every year then these might not be for you. As for the back pressure, I don't see how removing the cat would affect it. If the headers have larger diameter piping near the end, I can see how it could affect low end pressure, but with the 4-2-1 design, I can clearly see how it can increase hp in upper end

I don't think it's as simple as welding in a high flow cat. You would need all sorts of custom designed piping in order for the new cat to fit inline with the aftermarket headers. A tune may be able to get you around a CEL from an intake, but Def not from a missing cat.

Just thought i'd let anyone know for refrence, I got my AEM ETI the other day and installed it. No CEL yet, and the power increase is DEFINETLEY noticeable. Significantly more than the Takeda, and it looks really nice. Sound is different than the Takeda. The Takeda had a really loud aggressive intake sound, and the AEM has a mildly loud aggressive intake sound, but it amplifies the exhaust sound significantly.

If you'd like to see pics, I have some in my build thread!

Just finished installing the Injen short ram version this evening. No CEL and conducted a test run. All is well. Tomorrow I'll finish up by installing the cold air version and do another test run. One of the main reasons why I chose the Injen was because it converts between SR and CA. Here's a link to the site I purchased from. http://store.newlevelmotorsports.com/sp2117.html They are currently running a $20 off coupon for all purchases over $250. Hope this helps.

weapon r and descendant seem to be the most popular as far as intakes go. I personally like my AEM intake a lot, but then again i've never seen the weapon r or descendant in person

i believe CAI sound a bit better then SRI

top seller prolly Descendant because its cheap and can be converted between SRI and CAI
Also I think Descendant in flat black is absolutely gorgeous

Im not sponsoring either. I had a takeda and it sounded amazing but it gave me a CEL cause it got wet too often....rains to much up here

I just purchased an AEM CAI for my 2012. I'm planning to install it this weekend. For the record, it was $275, and comes in chrome or charcoal gray. If anyone wants pics, let me know and I will post them when it's installed.
