Default Thinking about a midpipe...

Hello all!

I am thinking about getting a Megan racing midpipe (or another brand if any exist) for my RS7, which already has a TRD axleback exhaust. It has stock headers and downpipe.

I am a little worried about rasp, so can anyone with this combination chime in? I know that any catless headers make it super raspy, but I haven't heard any good samples of a midpipe + axleback combo.

Thanks!

I can guarantee you rasp will happen if you do that. It needs a Resonator, which the OEM Mid pipe is a Resonator.

I wouldn't personally do it. the only way to have a mid pipe/delete resonator delete and not sound like crap, is to have a
STOUT muffler/resonated muffler. which the TRD is definitely not, it's very minimal so it would drone/rasp out I believe.

Minimal power gains and the chance for it to sound horrible...is it really worth it?

+1 to what has already been said. I have full exhaust minus the midpipe and no rasp - it rasps uncontrollably once you change that (the only reason I do not have one).

If you absolutely haaaaave to have it, bring it to an exhaust shop to have them weld in a Vibrant or 2. Either way though, you won't pick up more than maybe 2 hp from swapping it.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I am really just looking for a slightly louder exhaust note, but if every option besides a different axleback induces rasp I will probably just hold off for now. I know power gains are super minimal, I'm just worried about the sound.

Dezod green header (if you can find one used) and the Megan S-pipe won't rasp and will both increase exhaust volume, but stay away from the Megan midpipe itself unless you want to add a resonator or 2.

Full catback you can do without issue as long as it has resonators. TRD sounds pretty good as is though.

If you want louder sound, just chop off muffler and replace with different one. A straight-through muffler will be louder than factory for sure. Glasspacks and cherry-bombs were all the rage back in '60s.

Yeah, and well into the 70s. They were OK on a stick-shift car, but not so much on an automatic, (IMO). I always preferred the "turbo-muffler" sound myself, or the "Cherry-Bomb Qs" back then. At least you could hear your passenger talking when driving at hi-way speeds, and still had your voice after an hour or 2 of yelling over the mufflers.
