Default Transmission Noise While Clutch isn’t Pressed

2012 Scion tC, while in neutral and idling, there is a noise (don’t know how to even describe it but kinda sounds like a bearing) that stops as soon as the clutch is pressed in. AC and fans are off so it’s not them. I think it could be a bearing but unsure if it’s release bearing or input bearing. New to the technical aspects of transmissions so I don’t know for sure. Any idea what it could be? Goes up with RPMs.

Time to source a replacement transmission. The early year 6MT's on these had input shaft bearing issues and it requires a full rebuild to fix or replacement.

A throw-out bearing would make noise only when the clutch pedal is pressed.

What happens when the bearing fails? I’m bringing it in soon as possible to get it looked at, just bought the car so not very happy I’ll have to dump another few grand to fix it

Worst case scenario, it will explode and send shrapnel all thru your transmission. Can replace just the bearing itself, but it's at the very end of the transmission so it requires everything to come out in order to access. I think a replacement is ~$2k from Toyota.

I went through it recently, I paid 2400 for brand new transmission, which imo was fair. used ones are 1k in my area with same issue most likely, new one from Toyota seemed like the smartest move. I swapped clutch out why it was removed, dealer charged me just parts only, no additional labor. something like 700 dollars.

all said I was in for a 4k repair, but thats a new clutch + trans and labor. I think it's a steal, if I consider I got 10 years out of the last unit and clutch. hoping it goes another 10 years. beat buying a new car

Default Shop Time

Well, gave it to a shop and they are rebuilding it, new bearings and synchros and a new clutch all for $3500CAD. Definitely more than I wanted to spend on the new car but should be good for a few years now!!

atleast it'll last a long time. tho how much more would a brand new transmission be? for me, people quoted same price to rebuild it as Toyota charged me for a new trans.
