Default Transmission replacement

I was woundering if anyone had some advice on replacing your own transmission? I'm looking to replace my transmission bc I have a 160,000 miles on it, and 2 bearings that are failing. I have all the tools except I do not have a lift, which makes things tricky. Any suggestings whether I should pay a mechanic to do the job for $4500, or try and replace the bearings myself?

How much does a transmission cost? It's basically like doing a clutch job, just unbolts and then the new unit bolts on. Helps to have a friend and a lift, but if you can jack the car up high enough you should be alright. Sucks about bearings failing - how do you know there's 2 that are failing?
