Default Weird Stereo issue

Last year my stereo stopped working. The head would turn on, CDs would spin, but no sound. Strangely I could still listen to music if I used my phone via Bluetooth. The dealer told me it was an 'internal fault' and the head unit had to be replaced (for $1400). I got an alpine deck from a friend, installed it and...still no sound. Strangely the head unit has to be turned on for me to get any low end sound (from the blue tooth audio) which leads me to believe that it isn't an issue with the deck's internal amp. Any ideas? I'm perplexed.

Check your wiring. Be sure to purchase a Toyota wiring harness so you dont tap into the factory harness.

Thats where i'd start, cause it sounds like its getting power to the deck and no power to speakers.

Try using the radio?

Sounds like the external amp under the passenger seat is dead. Check fuses first.

Under the driver's seat, but yeah...it's possible.
