Default Break pads & rotors

Hello everyone, got couple questions here regarding break pads and rotors. First of all, sorry if I am in the wrong section. So the deal is that, I took my tc to the dealership for the maintenance and randomly asked the dealer to check the break pads. Later on the dealer calls me and tells that my pads are almost dead (down to 4-6 mm) and that my front rotors have heat spots? then he quoted me for 450-500 to fix everything. When I came to pick up the car he said that, toyota will give me pads and rotors, I will just need to pay for labor, which is 250. Now is it a good deal? Or could you guys recommend decent rotors and break pads? I watched few videos and did few pads changes on my civic, kinda have an image what to do.

thnx for replies in advance.

First off how many miles do you have on your car? I have 30k on mine with autox time and mountain runs and am still at 50% life left.

.. 4-6 is approximately 50% life left, you don't need to replace them yet!(if you want to you can)... And rotors , if you have access to a brake lathe, you can just machine the rotors(if they are within minimun thickness spec) and service/deglaze your pads!

But if you're getting hooked up with free pads and rotors and for Toyota to complete the brake job for 250 and you don't know what you're doing then let them do the job! If you machnically inclined, cheaper to by the rotors/pads and replace them you're self! It's pretty simple! Hope this helps, good luck

Cheers

250? I wonder how much per hour they charge in labor because that's ridiculous (skilled mechanic can kill a brake job in an hour or less). Mine were just done and it ran me 260 including rotors, Ceramic pads, new brake hardware and labor.

250 is not that bad... Toyotas menu price is 1.0hr for pad replacement and 1.0hr for machining front rotors ( if machinable) with no charge on parts... At 129.95 labour per hour... Is $260 for the job! Might be cheap to purchase pads/rotors and do it yourself save you a few bucks

They are not machining the rotors, he's getting all new parts so technically at the price for labor you quoted from Toyota, they are charging him for two hours.

From my experience (a Toyota tech my self) should be 1.0hr pad replace and only 0.5hrs to replace with new rotors! But then the cost of the rotors is similar to just machining and no parts

Agreed, that is why I asked for some decent rotors and brake pads, so I can do the job myself.

you are so right and that is why I asked people here for some decent rotors and brake pads brands, so I can buy and do the job myself...

Just priced all 4 corners for my gf's '06 tc. O'reilly auto's base replacement parts comes out to $198 for all 4 corners. Is $50 bucks worth doing the install yourself?

for rotors, go centric or stoptech...they are both made by the same company and run well. I put centrics on my aunt's car and I'm running stoptech slotted's on mine. both are very well made and are treated to avoid rusting at the center and around the edges of the rotor.

for pads, go hawk or posi quiet. i'm running EBC red stuff pads right now and i'm not a huge fan. they have nice bite and braking performance on my stoptech rotors, but i've been running them for almost 10k miles and they still squeal some.

Is that all 4 corners or just the fronts? $260 including labor is cheap.

Sounds about right. I ended up spending 220ish. But that's because I spent 80 bucks per rotor on the StopTechs and another 80ish on the EBC pads (which I'll never do again). Luckily I had a coupon from AutoAnything (they email coupons all the time), which brought it down to around 220.

If you go with centric rotors, that will cut you down to about 50 per rotor. They appear to be made with the same care as the StopTechs, just without the 'fancy' slotting or cross-drilling. Combine that with Posi Quiet pads and yes, that puts you right at 150ish for fronts, or well less than 300 for all four corners (rear brake parts are always cheaper).
