Default Tire needs replacing.. advice?

Hey guys, I have been an owner since April 2011. I have a Scion TC 2011 and I recently got a nail in my tire. Not repairable and the Toyo tire from the dealer costs like $380. I would like to replace the tire for about $200.

My questions..

Will any tire of the proper car specifications, 225/45R/18, fit well and look good? will it stick out against the other tires? Will it fit my rims and look like the other tires?

Can I get the same OEM tire from somewhere other than the dealer? IE cheaper and with installation as I am not really car savvy.

I am looking at the Goodyear Eagle GT tire for a replacement. $225 to replace, warranty, and road hazard.

Thanks for any help guys =D

Check tirerack.com

It is recommended to keep all tires the same, but it is not the end of the world to have 2 different sets of tires on the car. If you're only replacing one tire, get the same Toyo tire in the same size. Not sure what Toyo Toyota uses from factory, but pretty sure tirerack will have it.

Thanks, still deciding on how to go..
Going to check tirerack and double check with the dealer.
Looking like I'm leaning towards the Goodyear Eagle GT if its not that big of a deal.

Just remember the tires are designed to work together to reduce the chance of hydroplaning/etc.

Not a huge deal, but something to remember.

Based on what you're describing you're only replacing one tire, I would not have 3 matching tires and one unmatching.

Yea I was thinking it wouldn't be recommended. I called my dealer and they have the tire for 385 installed.

So it looks like tire rack is the way to go at 340
288 + 15 ship + 35 install = approx. $340

The associate I talked to said it wouldn't be too bad to have a different tire since its such a big price difference. Another possibility he suggested was replacing 2 tires to match up.

Still pondering but I need to get it done in the next couple of days. Anyone go through something similar or have any more insight?

Have you tried going to the local tire shop to see if they can do anything about the tire? Dealer told me I had a nail in my tire and was irreparable, so I declined their offer of buying one new tire and took it to a shop, got it patched up, and put 20k+ miles on it. But then again, I could just be lucky.

I was thinking to try that... maybe it can be a short term solution if anything to get more miles out of my tires until a proper 2 or 4 wheel replacement. I only have about 12k on them. Plus gives me more time to save money. =)

Get 2 tires, and keep the tires in the front the same and the tires in the rear the same. And of course obviously, put the new tires in the front. Since your tires are directional each set will always travel together even when rotating.

Any tire of the same OEM size will fit just as well but i would never buy the OEM make/model. There are much better tires out there for the money

I think the $200 budget for this is a little low. Figure $20 to mount and balance each tire, leaving you $80 for each actual tire. Good 17" tires cost ~$100 and is not something you want to cheap out on. For $300 you can get a very good pair of tires mounted and balanced.

Oh the $200 was for one tire. I can see myself spending 300 or a little more for two.

Don't you put the new tires in the back for better traction?

This is a pretty loaded question.

Some will argue that you should put the better tires on the front since they are your drive tires, tires that steer the car, and tires that slow the car down.

And others will say the rear to get the best possible traction in wet/snow conditions.

So guys I went through with it and purchased 2 new tires placed on the front.

I took the tire to a local tire repair store and the tire was unrepairable.. turns out there was two nails..

I got 2 Goodyear Eagle GT for $388 total. I saved my other Toyo as a backup spare. Thanks for all your replys :-)

Couldn't spend $700 on two toyos...

Holy cow. I got 4 new tires shipped from tire rack for around $50 more than you spent for 2.

EDIT: I forgot the tc2 has 18" wheels from the factory, that makes more sense
