Welcome Debbie, have the mechanic clean the pulley for the belts and the tensioner, these will have layers of old belt material built up that prevent full contact with new belt. Same effect as lose belt, also belt tensioner could be going out causing squeal from bearing/bushing wear.
Good luck and BTW I still have stock radio in my xA and the dealer had to swap to get my BCP 5speed from dealer in Houston..

105,000
Just getting ready to install another blower motor,2nd one to crap out on me. Always seems to be in the colder months so that's a good thing.
Been using Amsoil since 3000 miles and will never use anything else period. Runs like it did when I first bought it new in 06.

^^sounds like you should check the cabin air filter. Will cause blower motor to overheat if clogged due to loss of airflow!? Good luck, Have 151,111 miles on my xA and have used Castrol GTX ever since new. running great 38/40MPG

I bought my xA about 7 months ago and it's had a loud drive train from the beginning. It needed a clutch job and I thought the noise would go away after a new flywheel and clutch kit, but it didn't.
The clutch release bearing was replaced twice thinking that was the problem. I think it's the transmission input shaft bearing.

Has anyone with a manual tranny had problems with a bearing in the tranny?

Had terrible road noise every time my tires need replacing, on third set of tires and happens everytime. Smooth and quiet with new rubber on the road, especially the rear would howl extremely loud as speed increased, overpowering stereo at 50-70MPH. Bazooka sub did help when installed.

Having the same problem with my 06 xA with 53,000 miles. Husband just came home from mechanic it needs a new charcoal filter to the tune of $500.

He gave me the option of trading it in as we have had to replace front wheel bearing 2 years ago and the rack & pinion 6 months ago. Think I'm going to keep it. I love my xA.

Default how many miles

Going over 130K this evening, I have done more of my own maint. on this car than any of my past cars, it builds confidence, and there is plenty of help on the forums.

Got a quote on charcoal filter at the auto shop (it is actually called vapor canister). You have to order one from the factory for $300 or something. Just for fun took apart my own canister and filter - took me about 7 min to detach them from underneath the car.
Never done this before BTW. I inspected both and did not find anything bad so I will probably buy a used one from a junk yard and install a canister. I'll never buy a new one to shut a stupid light, it is a waste of money!

76,000 miles here. I've had a lot go wrong, which is why I joined this forum because I'm tired of being taken to the cleaners by mechanics.

1. Serpentine belt blew, slapped the hell out of my Scion's water pump (destroying it and causing the car to overheat). Once it was replaced, squeaking came back in a couple days and hasn't gone away. Shop won't even inspect it again without a payment.

2. Not sure my spark plugs or my filters have been replaced...ever. Aside from my oil filter, that is. I keep going to mechanics and they keep giving me the "yea, looks great" routine. It's been 7 years guys, come on.

3. Shakes and sounds like hell on the inside. It has literally started sounding like flying in an airplane at take off and landing.

4. Transmission keeps slipping on ~2nd gear. Not sure why but I can't accelerate like I used to. The gas pedal and brake pedal are both loose and move around.

I think my car needs a serious overhaul, but the cost...it might just be worth it to trade it in and start paying on a new Scion.

I have 88,000 miles on my xA. I started having the check engine light come on & had the dealer replace the charcaol canister.....THREE TIMES NOW! It cost me $655 the first time and has been covered by the warranty the rest of the times. They tell me that Toyota is aware of a problem with the Canisters & are trying to resolve it. My car won't pass inspection with the check engine light on & it keeps coming on sooner every time they replace the canister. Tonight it came on again & I just had it replaced four days & 337 miles ago!
I'm getting very frustrated with it.

My canister was replaced under warranty soon after I bought the car in 2006. No problems since then though.

Default 123K'ish

I have an 04' I bought at 115K and I have it now at 123K'ish.
List of fixes I did as soon as I got home:
Flushed Engine, went to Synthetic Oil
Flushed Trans, went to Synthetic Gear Oil (5spd manual)
New Spark Plugs (I'm fan or NGK Vpower)
New Front Rotors, hardware & Pads, rebuilt the Calipers and repainted
New Rear Shoes and Hardware, Turned the Read Drums and repainted
New Swaybar end links
New Tires, previous owner had the wrong size on the car
New PCV valve, New Battery, New Belts
New Clutch and Flywheel by Clutch Master
Built my own custom Exhaust, the old muffler was toast

I haven't had a xA when it was new but I did have an xD that was new and my xA @ 123K now feeling really similar... think motor mounts are next to do.

Default 2004 xA

Just went over 250K with very few issues! As I say that I am now having misfiring problems LOL. Taking it over to a friends to see what the codes say!
Seems there are quite a few things that can cause this problem from reviewing the posts here (Thank you everyone who has taken the time to respond to those).

Have a great weekend!
