I have just over 3000 miles on my xA RS 1.0 and I've yet to have a 30+ mpg tank of gas. I've been averaging about 25-26. I drive 32 miles to work in the morning and 32 miles home in mostly stop and go traffic, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I've tried babying it, I've been varing my speed to try and "break it in" and I'm just not sure what else to do. I've been getting just under 300 miles before my low fuel light comes on, which leaves me at 25 mpg on a pretty consistant basis. It's REALLY frustrating to be getting so much less per gallon than what so many other owners claim to be getting.

Any ideas??

2005 xA automatic, stock wheels with 8500 miles.

Best recorded MPG was 37 on straight, flat, freeway at about 70mph.

Overall average to date is 29.6 for all types of driving.

The EPA ratings for most cars is about 10% higher than "real mpg" under typical driving conditions. About 70% of my driving is city, stop & go, so I'm happy with 29 for an overall average.

My last car was a Nissan Altima, EPA rated at 21/32 and it averaged around 23mpg.

I should note that the stock tires are Bridgestone Potenza RE92 and I run them at 42-front & 39rear psi.

I just figured out why my milages seemed to have dropped off and is a 25-26mpg steady. Just before 2000 miles, I bought a remote start Clifford alarm. I've been using it alot to start the car in the cold, before I get there, so when I start driving, not only is the engine warm, but the interior is tosty too. This definately shouldn't be helping my milage! After the tank I'm currently on, I'm going to try and not use the remote start for the next 2 or so tanks and see how it things change.

LeeD.... aren't your tires a bit over inflated?? I thought we were supposed to run them @ 29! Perhaps that is affecting your stats as well....

I'm also running my stock Bridgestone's above the recommended 29psi. But after testing about 10 different combinations from 26-46psi, and various offset front to rear pressures, I settled on 42-front & 39-rear. Even though the maximum cold pressure is listed as 40psi, it just felt soft and unresponsive below 42/39.

Of course a better solution would be larger wheels with lower profile, and higher quality tires.

With the problematic gas tank/filler neck I cannot judge full closely enough to get a very close idea of highest mileage. My average for something over 1000 miles approaches 37 MPG for mixed driving. Very little multi lane.

Actually changed them to higher pressure on purpose, to help reduce the milage around the 800-1000 mile mark. It looks like it didn't seem to effect it much. We had thread here talking about tire pressures and their effect on milage a few months ago. I'm too lazy to find the thread and post the link here..

I remember that thread as well, but I wasn't convinced. My last tank was exactly 30 MPG... all HWY driving on Christmas trip... I tried to keep it around 60 MPH, but really probably rolled around 75 MPH for the 600 miles or so...

So 30 MPG is pretty good I'm thinking for driving that fast.

My '04 xA averages about 31-32 MPG, doing a lot of city driving. I've gotten only as high as 34 when doing freeway driving at the speed limit. I have an automatic and the stock wheels, tires kept at 32 PSI.

Last fill up of about 9.5 gal got me 260 miles in mixed city/freeway driving.
This top up, 1/2 way through another 9.5 gal (I'm driving full to Empty gas tank blinking), doing about 150 miles for about 5 gal.

No matter what, doesn't seem to want to get up past 31mpg that's on the xA's sticker.
No way is this xA going to get near 38mpg!

tires on 29 as recommended, auto trans.

regret getting this xa now, my rsx gets 32 mpg and it's 100 hps more than the xa.

I see your point that the RSX has a more sophisticated engine. But if we compare cars from different classes then you'll need to offset any disappointment in mileage with the extra 2000 gallons of gas you can by with the lower MSR price for the xA RS 1.0

the MPG on the sticker was a big selling point for me. I bought the car for this reason and it's just disapointting not getting it at this moment.

Down to the last two ticks on my 9.5 gal fill up and this thing is back to ~25mpg today. Don't know why it gobbles up gas like crazy, but we'll see in two ticks what it really gets on a refill (waiting for the gas light to blink again for an accurate measure).

=(

I agree - was eyeballing the RSX (still looks sweet years after release) myself, and the xA 1.0 + turbo is right in the same ballpark as a new RSX. So here, Toyota is really killing us by sticking a crazy 38mpg on the sticker (like what?!? at 40mph on an empty freeway?!?)

32 mpg would have gotten me to and from work for an entire month w/o a single fillup, but at 25mpg, what in the world is this sticker saying?!?

(would be funny if the number was actually mpk !)
