First, we've noticed a noise from the engine compartment. I'd describe it as "whirring with a hint of buzzing," like a cheap metal boxfan with old bearings or even like the engine noise from Mario Kart, but less electronic, of course.
It is related to engine RPM, not tire speed. Once we're going about 55 mph in 4th gear, the wind noise overwhelms it, but if I downshift to 3rd it is noticible again. This sound started maybe a month ago, I think.


Second, last week we had the three lights come on (Check Engine, VSC, Trac Off). The scanner said P0442 (Evaporative emission system, small leak or no flow condition).
A local shop said it was just a cap and filler neck problem, and is waiting on an estimate to replace the filler neck. My first question is: how much should replacing the filler neck cost?
My second question is: Could a vacuum leak up front cause the type of noise we're hearing?

This xB is a 2005 with about 140,000 miles. My wife is driving it over 1000 miles a week now for work, so we want to be preemptive if a fuel pump is about to die or something.

There is only one vacume line on the car, right behind the throttle body. It feeds the evap solenoid, which vents the gas tank. Visually check that line, it may be the problem.

I have the same problem, the mechanic quotes me $299 for filler neck replacement (part + labor), how did you fix your problem ? Was it the filler neck?
