Saw dreaded spots under the xB recently and had my own theory. Dealership verified my theory today that a new rear main seal will be needed.

Just thought I'd post to let folks know as I've seen posts where ppl. are suprised of a leak at 60k... I got them beat six times over!

I see no reason why it would not be - no mods made to the vehicle, etc. I didn't explicitly ask but the svc. mgr. and I were using terms such as "this is Scion's problem, not mine".

Before I drop it off for the replacement, we'll be very clear about who owns the burden of this leak.

Will take a few days as I don't think we can do it until late this next week.

A rear main seal leak is covered under your 5year/60K mile powertrain warranty!

I forgot to get back to everyone on the xB repair.

After cracking it open to get at the rear main, they realized there was a hairline fracture in the transmission housing which must have been facing the flywheel and explains why they thought it was the rear main as I did. One day past the promised date and it was ready for pick up.

Whole new manual transmission out of the deal and they say they did the rear main while they were at it.

Just to add: using synthetic oil (like Mobil1 etc) helps the silicone seals stay soft and flexible for a longer time than a regular mineral based oil does.
