Does the car have a really loud winding sound when you put it in Reverse????

Is my tranny a defect??

The reverse gear is not like the other five gears, when you shift into it the engine does not reverse direction.

the transmission uses what i think is a direct drive gear?? to change the rotation so the car goes in reverse.

Also while the car is drifting backwards you cant shift into the reverse gear,

try it, youl hear another interesting noise

is it straight cut to withstand more torque, or what?

oh, yeah, shifting into reverse while rolling backwards makes the wife look at you like you're retarded.

 

So I'm guessing everybody's xB makes a loud winding noise when Reversing...

My grandfather had a 57 DeSoto, 3 on the tree .. whined in reverse.

Friends had a Rambler, whined in reverse.
drove numerous pickups with manuals ... whined in reverse.

So, quit whining!

 

an automatic transmission does not whine errrrr complain in reverse sorry just had to do that

as soon as i move in reverse it makes a hella loud winding sound. I've owned over 10 cars but this just seems to be the first that does that... just had to ask

i'm gonna take a wild guess that it's to save monies.straight cut gears are pretty, well, straight forward to make. i would suspect that the angled gears cost more to design and make. it's not like you drive down the highway in reverse and need better efficiency (and less noise).

fun fact: i remember hearing/reading that there was a car (ferrari, i think) with at least two reverse gears.

All of my prior cars have whined but this one does seem to be the loudest.

 

Use some thick sound deadening material and use both mass and barrier loading techniques to kill the noise on the inside. As for the outside, don't drive as fast in reverse.
